Background and Rational

Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is one of the largest non-governmental organisations in Germany operating in the field of development cooperation and humanitarian assistance. Welthungerhilfe is dedicated to fighting for a world without hunger by addressing its causes. Since its foundation in 1962, WHH has worked in 70 countries alongside national and international partner organisations to enable people to control their own lives and secure their human right to food on a sustainable basis. In Bangladesh, Welthungerhilfe has been implementing several development and humanitarian programme through partner NGO since last decade.

Welthungerhilfe (WHH) in Partnership with Uttaran and FIVDB have implementing the Project Strengthening Rural Advisory Services to Support the Economic Situation of Women in the Char Region of Bangladesh/ Rural Advisory Services for Women Empowerment (RASWE) which is aiming to improve the socio-economic situation of economically vulnerable and politically marginalized women in the Sirajganj District of Char region.

About the Project Target Beneficiaries and Areas

The project is aligned with and directly supports Bangladesh's national efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2 and 5 on poverty eradication, zero hunger and gender equality. The National Strategy for Women's Inclusion in Bangladesh envisages a country in which women are socially and economically empowered, are able to make their own decisions and have attained economic prosperity, thereby contributing to the nation’s economic and social transformation. Implementing this project designed to strengthen Rural Advisory Services (RAS) for the benefit of women in the Char Region would undoubtedly complement the national strategy on the inclusion of women in the country.

The overall objective (impact) of the project is “To improve the socio-economic situation of economically vulnerable and politically marginalized women in the rural district of Sirajganj in the Char region.”  To achieve this, the project aims to improve income and employment opportunities for poor women by promoting rural extension services, agricultural entrepreneurship and strengthened civil society to bring about gender-transformative change and sustainably empower women as self-determined agents of change who shape positive change in society.
