Operational Context:

The Senior Nutrition Associate will support and coordinate all the nutrition related initiatives in the camp. Under the overall guidance of the Nutrition Officer and with the support from the Senior Public Health Officer the incumbent will support implementing/ operational partners and liaise with other sectors to ensure smooth and harmonized implementation of nutrition activities. This will include undertaking regular visits to the camp in order to monitor and support the implementation of nutrition activities in UNHCR’s operations;   ensuring feedback relating to key nutrition programme data is given to implementing and operational partners, relevant UN agencies (e.g. UNICEF and WFP) and Ministry of Health at local level; identify unmet needs in nutrition and develop project activities to address identified needs and attending coordination meeting.  The task will be done in a multi-sectoral approach with Health, WASH, Education, Protection and other related sectors for the benefits of Persons of Concerns to UNHCR.

  • UNHCR’s operation has sufficient technical support in the field of nutrition thus better able to meet the needs of persons of concern.

Responsibility (process and functions undertaken to achieve results)

  • Provide advice on and develop nutrition objectives and priority activities in accordance with international standards for the refugee camps.
  • Monitor and evaluate Nutrition programmes against standard UNHCR and international indicators to ensure that programmes are evidence-based and implemented in a comprehensive and cost-effective manner.
  • Monitor nutrition programmes.
  • Apply various mechanisms and tools to ensure proper monitoring of nutrition programmes.
  • Undertake data analysis and interpretation.
  • Support periodic nutrition surveys.
  • Undertake regular missions to camps in order to support, monitor and evaluate the implementation of nutrition activities to ensure quality services that meet the needs of UNHCR’s persons of concern using the UNHCR Public Health and HIV Monitoring Toolkit as a guide. 

Provide technical support and guidance to implementing/operational partners where required; and support implementing partners to implement nutrition strategies including anaemia, infant and young child feeding, and micro-nutrient deficiencies, etc.

  • Support the implementation and scaling up of the infant and young child feeding programmes such as training and coaching of staff, and establishment of mother to mother support groups.
  • Regularly provide updates to the Nutrition Officer on the nutrition situation in the camps for sharing with donors, external actors and other UN agencies.
  • Support nutrition focal points and coordinators to develop training plan, organize and act as resource persons in workshops and training both in-service (formal) and on the job (coaching) Provide on the job training of IP health staff on nutrition.
  • Advocate, inform, and communicate amongst stakeholders to ensure that the nutritional needs and status of refugees and other persons of concern at UNHCR are appropriately addressed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Represent UNHCR in monitoring of activities, meetings and fora related to the nutrition functions.

Essential Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of secondary school education with post-secondary training/certificate in Nutrition or related fields.
  • Minimum 11 years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of UNHCR programming.
  • Excellent computer skills (in MS office, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English and local language.

Eligibility:

An applicant who has internal status is a staff member holding an indefinite or fixed-term appointment in any duty station in the country. Former UNHCR General Service staff members, having held an indefinite or fixed-term appointment for an uninterrupted period of at least one year may apply for internally advertised vacancies at their previous grade or equivalent or one grade above, if the seniority requirements are met, for a period of two years following separation (if such criteria are not met, former staff members can still apply as external candidates).

External candidates: External candidates must meet the essential minimum requirements of the position and candidates not citizens of the country must comply with all eligibility requirements for employment in line with the prevailing legislative prerequisites in the country. Completed and relevant university education can count as maximum 50% of the required years of work experience.
