2. Background

CLARISSA is a consortium partnership programme, led by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), and implemented in partnership with Terre des hommes, ChildHope UK, and Consortium for Street Children (CSC) to generate a strong evidence base on, and innovative solutions to, the worst forms of child labour (WFCL) in Bangladesh and Nepal. The programme is designed to build on the strengths of all consortium partners to work towards a decrease in the number of children in the WFCL in the programme countries. Its focus is on surfacing key drivers of the worst forms of child labour and developing interventions to counteract them. The programme’s primary beneficiaries are children in the worst forms of child labour and those who are vulnerable to being drawn into it. The families of these children will benefit from greater resilience to shocks, better options for their children’s safe and healthy future and less intra-family stress and conflict.

Using geographic information system (GIS) combining this with ethnographic observation and reflections, CLARISSA aims to map children’s journey in their neighbourhood to understand a day in the life of a working child. Through the journey mapping of children, the project would explore neighbourhood dynamics that lead children in worse form of child labour. According to research design one research assistant would accompany one child over the period of 12 hours from morning to evening. During this period the research assistants will use GPS location tracker to collect children’s pathway of movement within the neighbourhood and will use a software with few questions to record children’s feelings. Besides, the research assistants will reflect on their whole day experiences with the children using observation method and later documenting that in writing.
