Nutrition Coordinator

Duty Station: Based in Ukhiya, Bangladesh (With frequent travel to field offices/Camps as required)
Report To:  Health and Nutrition program Manager

Contract length: Up to December 31, 2022 (With possibility of Extension subject to funding, program needs and performance of incumbent)

Relief International (RI) has been working in Bangladesh since 2004, implementing programs covering emergency response, health, economic opportunity, trafficking in persons, gender equality and youth empowerment. RI has been present in Cox’s Bazar since 2014 where it was implementing a trafficking in persons project in Ukhiya and Teknaf supporting old caseload refugees as well as host communities prior to the large-scale influx. Since 2017, RI has scaled up its operations in Cox’s Bazar to support the emergency response by providing integrated, multi-sectoral programming for refugee and host communities, covering health services, including a 100- bed COVID-19 Isolation and Treatment Center in Ukhiya, child protection, SGBV, complimentary food and livelihoods opportunities to support social cohesion. Relief International is currently implementing a large scale refugee response program in Cox`s Bazar in Bangladesh in collaboration with multiple partners including UNHCR, USAID.RI maintains a country office in Dhaka with multiple field offices in Cox`s Bazar.

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of health and nutrition program Manager, the nutrition coordinator will ensure the development and the implementation of CMAM, IYCF and other nutrition related activities in camps. S/he will ensure all nutrition activities are functioning properly, training staff and ensuring high quality of care to all beneficiaries through respecting guidelines and principles of good practices.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Implementation and monitoring of nutrition activities

  • To oversee implementation of CMAM components, IYCF and GMP.
  • Provide support, on job mentorship and supervision to nutrition staff working in the camps.
  • Centralizing all the CMAM information from Sector, from the organization and share with team members.
  • To liaise with community health coordinator and other health key staff to strengthen health and nutrition integration as well linkage between outreach activities and facilities.
  •  To ensure clear linkage and timely transfer within CMAM components and IYCF services.
  • Organize regular (weekly)/ monthly meetings with nutrition site supervisors and other nutrition staff on field visits.
  •  Follow-up the performance indicators defined, reports on progress to his/her immediate supervisor (Health and Nutrition PM), indicates difficulties encountered in project implementation, and proposes improvements.
  •  Ensure appropriate CMAM, IYCF and GMP tools are available and properly utilized by supervisors and nutrition staff.
  • Participate in the drafting of internal and external reports to his/her immediate supervisor.
  • Prepare monthly statistical and narrative reports for nutrition activities.
  • Monitor and evaluate facility-based activities, including supervision of quality of appetite test, physical examination, referrals, follow-up, screening etc.
  • Monitor and evaluate IYCF-E activities, including supervision of quality of IYCF assessments and BCC such as one to one counseling.
  • To ensure proper recording and documentation of all nutrition related activities.

2. Capacity building

  • Participate in the identification of training gap, planning and facilitating nutrition trainings.
  • Assist in capacity building, including archiving the documents, tools and training materials in the context of project/s and ensure the availability of the verification sources.

3. Reporting and data collection

  • Ensure timely data collection and reporting to the direct line manager or following the data collection process on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarter and annual basis or upon request
  • Ensure appropriate tools are available and properly utilized in each center, documents achievements and regular records and reports.
  • Participate in follow-up and analysis of data, in collaboration with the data and reporting supervisor.

4. Administrative and logistical support for nutrition activities

  •  Liaise with the program manager in solving management and staff related issues.
  • Identify staffing needs in collaboration with nutrition site supervisors.
  •  Participate in the recruitment process of nutrition staff.
  • Conduct staff appraisal that are directly under your supervision and offer guidance to appraisal for staff indirectly under your supervision.
  •  Ensuring adequate distribution of all nutrition supplies, reporting tools, visibility to the nutrition centres; avoidance of stock-outs through close collaboration with the nutrition site supervisors, field logistician and the program manager.
  • Monitor and address needs for nutrition activities in line with available budgets, considering the time and RI procurement policy specific to the programs.
  • Liaise with program manager and supply and operation team on any procurement related with nutrition activities.

5.  Other tasks

  • Attend relevant sectoral coordination meetings when required.
  • Participate in nutrition technical working groups.
  • Coordinate participation of RI staff in sectoral assessments.
  • Liaise with other humanitarian actors to maximize collaboration and ensure proper coordination of activities.
  • Support and plan, presentations on donor visits and meetings.
  • Ensure that project/s, methodologies, or selection criteria do not place beneficiaries, RI staff or any other persons in harm way.
  • Upholds the image and values of RI at all times.
  • The tasks and responsibilities defined in this job description are not exhaustive and can evolve depending on the project needs. The employee could be requested to perform other tasks as his/her Line Manager may find necessary.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • BSC or master’s degree in Nutrition sciences, Public Health or with relevant experience/ training. 
  • Minimum 5 years of field experience, including significant experience in managing CMAM , IYCF and SBCC.
  • Experience of community-based nutrition projects
  • Work experience with other NGO’s would be an asset
  • At least one or two years of experience in the implementation of Nutrition projects, preferably in humanitarian contexts.
  • A team builder with excellent people skills; culturally sensitive and has the ability and interest to identify and work with a multicultural team.
  • Good knowledge of Public Health
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel spreadsheets)
  •  Strong interpersonal skills & excellent team player
  • Fluent in English (speaking, reading & writing)
  • Fluent in Bangla
