Hiring a Consultant for ‘Designing and facilitating session on Feminist Leadership”

Introduction

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organization that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. Plan International envisages a world in which all children and young people realize their full potential, a vision now shared by the 193 Heads of State and Government who adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015.

Plan International’s explicit purpose is to strive for a just world that advances children's rights and equality for girls. This purpose defines why we exist, and applies across the organisation, guiding everything we do over the next 15-20 years. The focus of our global strategy is on achieving equality for girls as the world's most marginalised and excluded group.

In Bangladesh, we have set our vision for 2030 as, ‘We will partner to empower girls and young women, to be heard, to live without fear of violence and to achieve their rights’. We have started the new country strategy in July 2020 aiming to achieve this exciting and ambitious vision. This would require the organization to have an effective, efficient and committed workforce willing to challenge the prevailing status-quo, engaging men, women, boys, youth people, specially girls and bringing best out of all to create synergy for movement at all levels – from community to national, and beyond.

Plan International started its operations in Bangladesh in 1994 and have presence in Rangpur, Barisal, Cox Bazar and Dhaka. We have a workforce of approx. 230 full-time staff, and work with hundreds of volunteers.

Background and Context of the assignment

Plan International Bangladesh aspires to be a truly feminist organisation, and this is the journey we set on since 2020. Our leadership team is committed to driving a feminist agenda within the organisation, and the ambition for gender equality and gender transformative leadership is embedded in our value- based leadership framework.

In order to be truly transformative our efforts recognise, celebrate and actively consider girls’ and young women’s multiple and intersecting identities, including poverty, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

There is ongoing work to do to make sure this feminist agenda is built into all aspects of the organisation’s operations and delivery. Our 10 Feminist Leadership principles gives an indicator to establish each of us as a true Feminist Leader. We have our Values-Based Leadership Framework in place that outlines how Plan International exercises feminist leadership.

Objectives of the assignment

Being a feminist leader requires us to go beyond being a good manager and to truly be a changemaker. This requires a lot of self-reflection and self-awareness. We have rolled out some sessions on Feminist Leadership to sensitize the staffs on what it means and the guiding principles that we must cohere to be a Feminist Leader. Now, we need to have deeper discussion on it, that will help us to exhibit appropriate Feminist Leadership traits with indicators are identify our stand as a Feminist Leader. We must be prepared to recognise and respond to different forms of resistance to gender equality amongst staff. This requires practical skills and strategies for influencing change in our colleagues who don’t yet share our commitment to gender equality and challenging our own unconscious bias.

Plan International Bangladesh will engage a trainer/facilitator who, firstly is a Feminist, and secondly has in-depth expertise and understanding on Feminist Leadership behaviors and the approaches to depict those behaviors. Besides, the trainer/facilitator needs explicit understanding of the indicators for measuring how accurately we are living by our feminist leadership values. Plan has established values and traits; the facilitator should prepare the module encompassing those imperatives.

The facilitator/trainer will be responsible to conduct session among staffs on Feminist Leadership, with the following objectives:

  • Explore what kind of leadership approach is needed in order to achieve gender transformative change
  • Assess what feminist leadership principles, mean in practice and how to implement them
