River Recycle
ABOUT US
About Us
RiverRecycle was established in Helsinki, Finland, in 2019 by Anssi Mikola.
Today, we are active in nine countries and benefit of the support of a team of more than fifteen professionals around the world and of a vast network of partnerships and collaborations. We are installing waste management systems on the shores of the most polluted rivers, collecting and recycling plastic waste and floating debris.
These operations enable local municipalities to effectively manage plastic waste, create safe and fair work for the hosting communities, and help to stimulate the economy by involving companies who will buy the end products of the river cleaning and recycling system, making the whole process self-sufficient.
With three projects already ongoing and several more in our pipeline, we aim to install 500 river cleaning solutions over the next five years to prevent 60% of river-born plastic waste from entering the oceans.
Our Mission
Our mission is to remove plastic waste from the world’s waterways while enabling the most affected communities to prosper in a circular economy.
Our Organisation
Over 80% of marine plastics originate from land. Rivers are a major pathway transporting waste from both inland and coastal areas into the seas. While this is a global problem, the communities where waste-collection systems are inefficient or non-existent are the most likely to contribute to plastic pollution. Asia, with its fast-growing population is home to 15 of the 20 most contaminated rivers in the world, while 86% of river-borne plastic waste flows into the oceans from this continent. We are currently active in India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Vietnam. In the next five years, targeting the most polluting rivers, we aim to install 500 RiverRecycle’s cleaning and recycling points. By implementing our solution, working in a circular economy, the quantity of plastic entering the ocean from rivers will be reduced by more than half with relief and social improvement for hosting communities.
About the Project
To transform the lives of informal waste workers by creating a new market for a stream of plastic waste that currently has no commercial value (SDG 11.6 & 12.5) and to generate decent job and employment from the promotion of thin plastic/waste value chain, Practical Action Bangladesh Country officer in consortium with RiverRecycle and other partners have been implementing a five years long development project. At the end of the project, we expect to have developed a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) business model that attracts investment to further expand and replicate at national level. This model for a responsible and profitable market in single-use plastic recycling will provide dignified jobs and improve the environment through reduced plastic waste pollution. With this project there will be oversight and regulation through embedding the system within municipal structures, linking with existing waste management processes and with other waste actors. The teaming of commercial and development outcomes will bring new insights and achieve business and social outcomes which can be a model for rolling out the system across the country and beyond.
