Assistant Scientist - Socio-economist

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose:

This position will contribute to the socioeconomic research and M&E activities of the One CGIAR new research initiative called Sustainable Intensification of the Mixed Farming Systems (SI-MFS) in Bangladesh. The main objective of the SI-MFS Research Initiative is to provide equitable and gender transformative pathways for improving the livelihoods of 15 million actors in selected mixed farming systems globally across five regions and six countries including Bangladesh. SI-MFS will achieve this goal by deploying locally viable socio-technical sustainable intensification innovation bundles that will maximize synergies and minimize tradeoffs between the systems’ biophysical and social components.

Under the minimum supervision of the Scientist, this position will contribute to SI-MFS’s socioeconomic research and M&E activities including design and implementation of socioeconomic and gender studies, design and implement surveys and case studies, collect and analyze socioeconomic data using innovative methods and tools, deliver knowledge through training, develop partnerships and coordinate research activities with stakeholders, design and implement M&E framework, and help in writing technical and scientific papers. The socioeconomic research activities include the design and implementation of household surveys, market studies, adoption and impact studies, gender and youth empowerment studies, case studies, FGDs, gender disaggregated data collection and analysis, and scientific report writing,    

This position will be based at country office Bangladesh and will only be filled by permanent citizens of Bangladesh.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assist to design and implement socioeconomic, gender, and market research studies
  • Assist to design questionnaires, sampling framework, etc and implement household surveys, FGDs, etc. using innovative methods and tools
  • Collect, check, and manage gender disaggregated socioeconomic data
  • Properly record and update database for efficient storage and retrieval of information
  • Summarize, validate, and analyze data using appropriate advanced statistical tools independently
  • Lead the monitoring, evaluation, learning, and impact assessment (MELIA) activities and implement MELIA activities for monitoring of research activities, outputs, and impacts.
  • Assist to write project progress reports.
  • Summarize research findings and draft papers and posters for presentation at local and international conferences and for publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Participate and present papers or posters at scientific workshops/conferences as directed by the supervisor
  • Establish partnership with stakeholders and coordinate with partners to organize meetings as well as to to streamline and implement research activities
  • Provide assistance and guidelines/info to project staff on implementation of research including the logistics
  • Assist to conduct training activities. Also, assist to transfer technologies, knowledge, technical inputs to NARES, NGOs, and value chain actors
  • Draft training material using readily available published information (i.e. protocols, methodology)
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor from time to time

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics, economics, sociology, or other social sciences with 5 years of relevant work experience in socioeconomic research, household surveys, gender, and M&E
  • Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, economics, development studies, sociology, or related subjects and at least 3 years of relevant work experience

Skills Required

  • Has proven technical knowledge and experience in socioeconomic research
  • Has competency to design and implement household surveys
  • Has competency to analyze data using econometric methods & tools
  • Has knowledge and experience on M&E
  • Has strong English oral and written communication skills
  • Has competency to publish research articles in peer reviewed journals
  • Has good presentation skills
  • Has excellent computer skills
  • Has experience of supervising or overseeing staffs
  • Knowledge of agricultural systems and agri-food value chains
  • Has experience in socioeconomic research and research management

Salary Ranges: Basic BDT (54, 883- 101, 167)/ per month

Other Benefits: Housing Allowance 30% of base pay per month, Transport Allowance BDT 12, 000, Festival Bonus: 2 times each year, Contributory Provident Fund, Returning Mother Allowance: BDT-2,000 per month for 9 months to female employees post-delivery of a baby to support return to the workplace, Medical insurance coverage: maximum US$16,000/year and other admissible benefits
