Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose

This position will assist scientists under the IRRI PPP and other projects with Rice Breeding activities. Also to support in developing rice breeding capacity of private partners. S/he will monitor and evaluate the progress of breeding research in field/ lab experiments, agronomic management, data collection, processing, analysis and report writing. Ensure providing information to the relevant scientists/ supervisor generated under the PPP project.

This position will be based at the Country Office Bangladesh and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Bangladesh. 

Roles and Responsibilities

Purpose

  • Contribute to the appropriate implementation of breeding research with appropriate experimental design, field lay-out, agronomic practices, data collection, process and analysis
  • Coordinate with private partners to support their research requirements to assure data driven decisions that are statistically analyzed with the appropriate statistical tools.
  • Verify suggested methodologies and establish parameters
  • Select and facilitate adequate research tools and equipment
  • Manage Assistant Scientist, Researchers, Technicians and Laborers
  • Coordinate required services and supplies for rice breeding activities 

Engagement 

  • Actively engage in developing breeding capacity of the private and NARS partners with in all sorts of technological aspect
  • Assign, monitor and evaluate research activities/tasks performed by Assistant Scientists, Researchers, Research Technicians and contract workers
  • Maintain research trials/experiments by fostering a productive teamwork environment
  • Assist in developing standard research protocol
  • Assure maintenance of accurate data recording and update database
  • Analyze and validate data using appropriate advanced statistical tools independently
  • Assist in the interpretation of results
  • Make recommendations for further research

Delivery

  • Participate in research activities with partners in developing desired rice varieties 
  • Lead in developing training materials and provide training to the field Researcher, Technicians and workers on field lay-out, setting trials/experiments, agronomic operations and data collection
  • Act as a Resource Person for the training courses and visitors
  • Provide field researchers, technicians and workers the requirement of logistics appropriate for research trials/experiments
  • Supervise Assistant Scientist, Researcher and Technicians
  • Contribute to the professional development of researcher and technicians
  • Contribute in preparing research reports and journal papers
  • Prepare posters and power point presentation for local and international conferences
  • Participate and present papers or posters in scientific workshops/conferences
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor from time to time 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science with 8 years of relevant work experience in plant breeding methodologies
  • Master's degree in Genetics and Breeding or relevant subject with at least 5 years work experience in modern breeding methodologies particularly in field trials and other experiments

  • Has proven technical proficiency in conducting research experiments
  • Has strong oral and written communication skills
  • Has strong analytical skills
  • Has experience with research management
  • Has good presentation skills
  • Has excellent computer skills
  • Has experience of supervising or overseeing staffs

Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. degree in Genetics, Plant Breeding, or Molecular Breeding and excellent research experience working at an international research organization.

Salary Ranges: Basic (70,667  - 130,833) BDT per Month

Other Benefits: Housing Allowance: 30% of base pay per month, Transport Allowance: BDT 14,400, Festival Bonus: 2 times each year, Contributory Provident Fund (CPF), Returning Mother Allowance: BDT 2,000 per month for 9 months to female employees post-delivery of a baby to support return to the workplace, Medical insurance coverage: maximum US$16,000/year and other admissible benefits
