The Resettlement Support Center Asia (RSC Asia), funded by the US State Department Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), assists persons throughout Asia seeking permanent resettlement in the United States. Responsible for a portfolio of 37 countries, RSC Asia: prepares refugee applications for the United States Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) using START (a State Department–managed data system that supports the arrival and resettlement of refugees through technology); provides information to resettlement agencies about arriving refugees and offers cultural orientation training to refugees bound for the United States.
Purpose
The Senior Staff Interpreter provides operational support to all departments in scheduling staff/contract/incentive Interpreters and providing language support services for applicants to the USRAP. The Senior Staff Interpreter acts as an interpreter of oral statements given in refugee languages into the English Language, and vice versa, for RSC Asia Prescreen interviews, U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) interviews, and for Cultural Orientation (CO) training.
Major Responsibilities

  • Provide interpretation for USRAP activities including RSC Prescreening, USCIS interviews, Inquiries, Outreach and follow-up activities, and Cultural Orientation (CO) training.
  • Adhere to and implement work in accordance with the USRAP Integrity and Compliance Guidelines.
  • Assist with managing Staff/Contract/Incentive Interpreter work schedule based on language needs in coordination with the RSC Asia Bangladesh Program Managers and/or Coordinators.
  • Assist in conducting monitoring and evaluation of Staff/Contract/Incentive interpreter performance and provide feedback for performance development to supervisor.
  • Track interpreting assignments for program statistical purposes, prepare and submit a monthly report to supervisor.
  • Act as co-trainer to supervisor and conduct training to all interpreters regarding professional interpretation services in accordance with USRAP Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist in recruitment and in mentoring new interpreters as needed.
  • Identify gaps and training needed as part of the professional development of interpreter team tracking.
  • Assist in providing Annual IRC Way, Fraud and Ethics (F&E) Training for incentive and local contract interpreters.
  • Update the interpreter training materials: video and power point presentation into local languages (Rohingya), review and update any new terminology into interpreter glossary when it is made available.
  • Provide language support to Cultural Orientation (CO) team in CO materials review.
  • Translate documents from Bengali/Rohingya/Burmese to English language and vice versa.
  • Perform other relevant duties as directed by supervisor.

Requirements
  • At least 3 (three) years of relevant professional experience in interpretation services is required.
  • Resettlement processing or other NGO experience is preferred.
  • Previous work in a multi-cultural environment is preferred
  • High level of professionalism while carrying duties per the USRAP Integrity and Compliance guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and meet deadlines, and work well under pressure in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Strong communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively and professionally with partners, colleagues, interpreters, and refugee applicants.
  • Problem-solver who takes initiative to provide solutions.
  • Ability to support activities through good listening and analytical skills.
  • When required, able to assist in providing the necessary guidance and support to co-workers
  • Able to travel whenever required
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Flexible and willing to learn and take on new tasks
  • Mature, positive attitude and able to work under pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills required.
  • Working knowledge of Rohingya language is required.
  • Computer Literacy –competence in Ms Office i.e. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Outlook desired
  • Ability and willingness to travel when required
