Officer-Market Development, BNA

iDE is an international NGO with over 40 years of experience in designing and delivering market-based anti-poverty programs in 11 countries. iDE was one of the first organisations to unlock the power of markets to fight poverty, reaching over 39 million people since 1982. iDE Bangladesh is the oldest iDE country programme, operated since 1982. Over the last four decades, iDE Bangladesh has focused on innovation in agriculture, food and nutrition security, WASH, clean energy, green enterprise development and women's economic empowerment with a market-based approach to address the increasing challenges climate change poses.

iDE Bangladesh is currently seeking two (02) qualified Officer-Market Development (OMD) for Feed the Future Bangladesh Nutrition Activity (BNA) project. This position is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in BNA at the local level. The OMD helps to form linkages for the local WASH entrepreneurs downward to consumers through last mile delivery agents and upwards to the larger private sector. This relationship will include rapport building through activities including but not limited to supply chain support, business capacity development training and technology introduction sessions local WASH entrepreneurs and last mile delivery agents.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Officer-Market Development will include but are not limited to the descriptions below-

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all project activities within an assigned district, under supervision of the Field Team Leader
  • Regular communication with all stakeholders for whom the OMD is a primary point of contact (POC) for rapport building, market systems strengthening and effective implementation of the project
  • Assist Field Team Leader and Technical Specialists to manage and operate all the field level activities of BNA
  • Follow the work plan and central instruction and perform accordingly to achieve the project goal
  • Prepare event repots along with other necessary reports and assist FTL for preparing the final report.
  • Maintain close contact and communication for project planning, strategy formulation and other issues with supervisors and partners, counterparts, service providers, government, private sector and project participants
  • Carry out responsibilities in financial management and administration at the local level and ensure the efficient use and maintenance of the project resources in consultation with supervisors

Programmatic Responsibilities

  • Identify potential market actors, WASH   entrepreneurs, dealers, retailers, lead firms
  • Building and maintaining strong relationship with Government, NGO/INGOs, private sectors and other stakeholders
  • Implement a variety of market linkages, supply chain, technology introduction and business development activities related to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)
  • Assess and improve skills and competencies of WASH market actors (e.g. latrine producers, water entrepreneurs, hand washing station producers, etc.) and businesses on a diverse range of business skills such as financial literacy, marketing, supply chain linkages, public sector linkages, and technical capacity, etc.
  • Build rapport and trust with WASH entrepreneurs for effective communication and linkage development
  • Co-facilitate WASH product demand creation activities
  • Increase market penetration for selected WASH technologies
  • Facilitate the development of business plans by the WASH entrepreneurs
  • Assess and improve skills & competencies of WASH entrepreneurs on a diverse range of business skills like finance, business planning, quality management, human resource management, etc.
  • Work together with the entrepreneurs to ensure linkage with the WASH Value Chain Actor
  • Facilitate WASH entrepreneurs to establish and maintain business networks at upazila levels and linked with wider area like District, Regional & National level to build profitable business relationships between entrepreneurs and others PSAs

 

Skills and Experience:
Candidates are expected to have the following qualification, skills, and experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Social Sciences, development studies, and/or other relevant subjects on WASH interventions

Work Experience

  • At least 4 years of working experience on market system development on WASH or other relevant field
  • Familiarity and experience with project management and implementation 
  • Considerable understanding and knowledge on rural, peri-urben and urban markets, and WASH service provisions
  • Previous experience in working with private sectors is preferable
  • Experience in business planning with WASH Services
  • Adequate knowledge in project finance
  • Relevant understanding of the technical, social, and other constraints in the development field

Programmatic Skills

  • Ability to responsibly manage district level funds, monitoring and team progress
  • Ability to plan and implement iterative field level activities for market systems change
  • Understands the facilitative role and local market development approach
  • Experience of value chain approaches, market development and deep dive research

Personal Skills

  • Leadership and management skills for both technical and non-technical team members, whilst be able to listen to others and recognize their contribution
  • Ability to work with team members and flexibility to adapt to different work conditions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Proven interpersonal and intercultural skills, including flexibility and sensitivity
  • Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to gender diversity
  • Ambitious, “can-do” attitude with an entrepreneurial nature and capable to prioritize work under pressure
  • Resilient and with the ability to think creatively to overcome challenges and effectively engage with new situations

Physical and Language Skills

  • Ability to travel and undertake fieldwork in rural, peri- urban and urban context
  • Ability to drive motorcycles and have valid driving license
  • Physical fitness required for frequent field visits and travels
  • Written and oral communication skills in English, including ability to present coherent and convincing messages to different audiences
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail communication and the internet browsing
  • Familiarity with internet based software systems such as Google Apps
