iDE seeks a qualified Officer, Inclusive Design, WASH for the scaling up Sanitation Market Systems in Bangladesh (SanMarkS II) Project. The goal of the project is to increase access to sanitation facilities in Bangladesh using iDE’s systems-based approach to sanitation. The SanMarkS II project, implemented by iDE Bangladesh will enable at least 1.2 million poor and disadvantaged people in 35 districts to gain access to improved latrines. The Project envisions to achieve this by conducting different implementation activities which engage, build capacity and help establish commercial linkage of sanitation value chain actors.

The incumbent of this role will be responsible for driving core inclusive sanitation and hygiene related product components design.Additionally  she/he will support in gathering and documenting key aspects of rural household settings and users, aligning Project requirements and presenting for leadership to take informed decisions for planning Project activities. Key elements in this role consist of reviewing technology, recommending and designing alternative designs that may enhance inclusion, usage and adoption among rural, marginalized and disadvantaged communities. In addition to this, the incumbent will support technical documentation of technology and technical orientation of Project staff.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

General Responsibilities

Inclusive Technology review and improvement support

  • Gather a thorough understanding of existing improved WASH technologies and services promoted within the Project. Support technical leads to evaluate household’s desirability, technical feasibility and commercial viability of the design, and improving adoption of the improved WASH products and services.
  • Explore constraints, challenges and scope for integrating inclusion considerations for Gender, disabled and minority communities utilizing latrines residing in rural and hard to reach communities
  • Explore technical challenges, bottlenecks and issues with project promoted technologies and services either on design, or on adoption side, which will be proposed for mitigation to Project Leadership and Technical Leads.
  • Support the design, prototyping, testing and finalizing new WASH technologies in line with recognized design principles (for example-HCD).
  • Support national, regional and local companies for rapid prototyping, testing and finalizing new WASH technologies.

Technical Documentation of technology

  • Review existing, available documentation and work on improving documentation for usage of experts, technical leads and relevant field resources.
  • Develop a framework for testing new sanitation technologies with support from relevant Institutional resources which would be used by Project staff.

Technical Orientation of Project staff

  • With guidance from relevant Technical lead, extend support for training Field staff to build a basic understanding of WASH technologies and services which would be leveraged during training and regular check in with Project staff.
Setting the tone
  • Actively and openly engage with the Project Manager and Technical Specialists to strengthen Project implementation activities and latrine designs as required
  • Proactive engagement with project team to resolve challenges on the ground associated with latrine product adoption
    Planning, and Strategy Development
  • Collaboratively support implementation of project activities through the preparation of multiyear and annual work plan in collaboration with the Project Manager and field teams
  • Conduct regular documentation of latrine technology adoption, key requirements and areas of value addition with support of Technical and Field Teams
Reporting and Submissions
  • Develop progress reports and other reports on a regular basis, documenting the key learning & findings, ensure accurate and timely data entry into the database
  • Create and update relevant technical materials, documentation and other collateral
Finance and Administration
  • Carry out responsibilities in financial management and administration at the local level and ensure the efficient use of the project resources with consultation of supervisor
Monitoring
and Evaluation
  • Support the E&A Expert in monitoring and result measurement related tasks that align with the incumbent’s technical area of work
  • Where relevant support with technical specialist and field teams to support as required for reviewing and revising results measurement plans
  • Actively engage in capturing best practices, key learnings, unique cases and other relevant documentation within technical domain to share with the wider team
Supervisor and Staff Development
  • Develop effective guidelines/tools that are associated with relevant technical domain
  • Provides close and supportive supervision and guidance to the field team and other stakeholders in the assigned areas to demonstrate outcomes and impact
Coordination and Support
  • Participate in relevant working groups and Dhaka and Field based meetings and workshops
  • Maintain close contact and communication for project planning, strategy formulation and other issues with supervisor, technical specialists, private sector partners and institutional support teams
  • Quarterly travel to all field hubs at least once for problem solving and systems development
Rapport Building
  • Quarterly travel to all project areas at least once for problem solving and systems development using the CLEAR framework (Connect, Listen, Educate, Ask, Resolve)
  • Engage with training provider partners  to develop collaborative work plans 
Other Responsibilities
  • Actively follow and engage with Global initiatives within iDE in other countries and other Bangladesh programs for stronger network connections
  • Actively learn and develop skills related to online platforms used by iDE including but not limited to: Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets
  • Maintain use of online platforms for sharing reports, documents and data
  • Represent iDE at external events and meetings as agreed with supervisor
  • Participate in all relevant meetings and workshops
  • Undertake additional tasks subject to workload and skill sets such as photography, cross-project trainings and evaluations
Required Qualifications

Successful candidate will have the following skills and expertise

Education
  • Civil Engineering background (Preferably from BUET and other reputed institutions)
Work Experience
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in the practical field of Engineering.
  • Prior experience in WASH Sector will be an added advantage in the role.
  • Experience and knowledge in WASH sector of Bangladesh and associated WASH technologies.
  • Training or exposure in design principles and HCD will be an added advantage.
  • Aesthetic sense in designs in terms of visuals as well as effectiveness.

In addition to the above, the following are the technical orientation and experiences required for the incumbent of the role to be suited to the requirements of the role:

  • Principles of Engineering, design.
  • Basic understanding of WASH and Sanitation technologies.
  • Skilled in inspecting structural design and recommending means for improvement.
  • Ability to document prescribed approach, guidelines leveraging support from technical team

Other Information and Conditions
  • The position would be the regular employment of iDE-B
  • The remuneration package, work days and deliverables might be change based on negotiation between iDE management and the contract
