HELVETAS is an international organization, operating in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe in the domains of water & infrastructure, environment & climate change, rural economy, skill development & education, and governance & peace. In Bangladesh, HELVETAS supports the development of rural livelihoods and local governance through direct support to agriculture and has demonstrated experience in improving access to drinking water as well as reduction of water induced risks, including flood, erosion, and salinity targeting the extreme poor and disadvantaged.

HELVETAS, in partnership with ACTED and REACH, is launching an emergency operation to respond to the Rohingya Refugee Crisis and is working in particular the sector of Site Management (CCCM) in the Camps of the Kutupalong-Balukhali Expansion Site, Cox’s Bazar.  As part of this work, ACTED’s REACH Initiative programme conducts extensive quantitative and qualitative research with affected populations in Cox’s Bazar to inform humanitarian decision-making

Functions

Research preparation and training

  • Coordinate with REACH’s data team to make sure that translations received by REACH’s translation partner Translators Without Borders (TWB) are input correctly into data collection tools.
  • Work with REACH Assessment Officers to provide support during training of data collection teams to clarify REACH research teams’ comprehension of translated research tools.
  • Work with REACH Assessment Officers and Field Coordinators to test appropriateness of translated research tools with Rohingya and Bangladeshi community members.
  • Coordinate with TWB to modify and update research tools in response to research team and community feedback.
  • Directly translate shorter assessment tools from English into Bangla/Chittagonian where TWB support is not available.

Research implementation and data processing

  • Provide interpretation support to international Assessment Officers attending FGDs in the field.
  • Work with REACH Field Coordinators to help facilitate FGDs when required.
  • Contribute to daily debriefings of FGD teams after each day of field data collection.
  • Coordinate with the REACH Data Team to make sure all FGDs are properly transcribed and organised.
  • Take the lead in translating all FGD transcripts from Rohingya/Chittagonian or Bangla into English.

Additional responsibilities

  • Additional responsibilities supporting REACH research work may be ascribed as required by the Translator/Field Coordinator’s line manager.

Selection criteria

  • Fluency in spoken Chittagongian and written/spoken Bangla and English are mandatory
  • Familiarity with Rohingya language preferred
  • Previous experience conducting translation work with humanitarian or development organisations desirable
  • Strong leadership and organisational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate with both field teams, and local communities
  • Flexibility and adaptability are essential, as well as the ability to plan, take initiative and organize work independently.
  • Positive attitude and a willingness to learn
  • Comfortable working in refugee camp settings and spending majority of time in the field
  • Comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment
