Industrial Engineering & Middle Management Training Expert

Project : GIZ develoPPP.de Program, Ghana
Reports to : Program Manager.
Assignment Period : 2 years with a possibility of an extension
Location : Accra

Scope of Work
The GIZ public-private-partnership program (develoPPP) was established by the German government (BMZ) to support and foster the involvement of the private sector in developing countries and emerging economies. GIZ is currently launching a public-private partnership program focused on the emerging apparel industry in West Africa, with a focus on Ghana. The primary objective of the program is to strengthen small and medium-sized clothing manufacturers for the export market in order to create qualified and socially responsible employment.

A core aspect of this program involves launching a Training Centre for middle managers, with a focus on industrial engineering, quality control / assurance, and line supervision skill sets. This Centre will focus on both training new middle managers for the apparel manufacturing industry (graduates of industrial engineering program) and upskilling existing managers currently working in factories in Ghana

Job Description
We have a great opportunity for an experienced Trainer and Industrial Engineer with passion and desire to build local capacity and shape the path of the next frontier of apparel manufacturing in West Africa.

Tasks

1. Training Implementation

  • The Industrial Engineering and Middle Management Training Expert shall work with the Head Trainer to trial the courses and amend as necessary to ensure deliverables are met and learning is embedded. Courses will include
    • Industrial Engineering (work study, SMV) and Lean system
    • Production Planning and Control (PPC)
    • Costing
    • Quality Assurance / Quality Control
    • Line supervision (Production Monitoring)
    • Basic understanding of fabric types
    • Basic understanding of compliance standards
    • Train the Trainer for operator training
    • Cutting room techniques
    • Raw Materials management including inventory systems and quality control
    • Deliver middle manager training sessions, coordinating input from other trainers and experts as relevant
    • Liaise with and support the in-factory Head Trainer to deliver the in-factory practical training sessions that will complement classroom learning

2. Training Administration

  • Ensure that classroom training sessions are conducted in a way that works well with the local culture, including incorporating videos and pics of real time workplace.
  • Ensure that ATTC and any other local university lecturers are included and coached on program content and training approach and gradually increase their ability to independently administer the course
  • Administer mid and end-of-training assessments and certifications
  • Monitor attendance and highlight any issues concerning students

3. Other tasks

  • Participate in internal and external training events.
  • Takeover other office activities and tasks as assigned by the manager and/or the responsible staff

Your Profile

  • Proven experience as an industrial engineer or production manager in a clothing factory (minimum 5 years’ experience)
  • Proven experience conducting training and passion for transferring skills locally and developing capacity in people
  • Excellent leadership and training skills; ability to adapt style to suit cultural context
  • Exceptional cross-cultural communication and presentation skills
  • Previous working/living experience in a developing country, preferably in Africa
  • Fluency in English
  • Evidence of the following characteristics: humble, inspiring, self-aware, resilient, adaptable, proactive, persistent, resourceful, able to work under pressure and respect deadlines, strong at building relationships and resolving problems, poised, active listener, fun to work with, and full of integrity
