A. Background

In the current Sixth Five Year Plan (SFYP), Bangladesh propagates ‘access to justice for all’, but in practice, the vast majority of the population has little access to justice. The criminal justice system offers limited legal aid, particularly to vulnerable groups. A fundamental problem for citizens, especially women, children and those in rural communities, is that they are not aware of the rights and services they are entitled to and as a result, they cannot benefit from those opportunities. To overcome this situation National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has undertaken different awareness raising initiatives including launching a National Helpline for Government Legal Aid-16430. The helpline has opened a new window of hope for the general justice seekers and helping to create better access to the Government provided legal aid.

GIZ Bangladesh is jointly working with NLASO to empower justice seekers through information and media campaign. Both organisation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and develop joint strategy to promote the National Helpline for Government Legal Aid nationwide.
