Native English Speaker Editor (Text)

Duty Station:  Bangladesh

Estimated Duration: Three years: Selected candidate should be available for minimum of 3 years duration of the contract with the stated rate quotes (not changeable)

Contract Type: This will not be fulltime engagement contract, this will be on call bases contract. The fixed number of hours, days or months are not determined and it depend on UNICEF‘s need.

Contract Start: The contract will begin ASAP.

Reporting to: Communication Manager, Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships (CAP) Section

A. Background:

UNICEF Bangladesh is one of the biggest UNICEF offices in the world and the work it undertakes has a profound impact on the lives of the country’s children. This impact should be strongly promoted through documents and reports, in addition to UNICEF Bangladesh’s website and social media channels to raise awareness about the issues faced by children in Bangladesh.

These reports and documents will be a key source of information for UNICEF National Committees, donors and partners. They will help to showcase UNICEF’s work in the country by providing detailed information on all UNICEF’s programmes and projects as well as human interest stories, which clearly illustrate the impact UNICEF Bangladesh is having on children’s lives.

To this end, we would like to develop a pool of in-country native English speaker freelance editors to provide support on English language editing of documents and reports as and when required.

Under the guidance of the Communication Officer, the editor will work closely with section colleagues and programme staff.  

B. Objectives, Purpose and Expected Results

  • Edit, proof-read, restructure, and rewrite as required materials ranging from complex publications and substantive technical documents to human interest stories.
  • Produce reader-friendly, jargon-free products appropriate for varied audiences.
  • Ensure clarity, consistency and readability of the text for a wide range of audiences.
  • Make necessary revisions according to the UNICEF Style Book (will be provided) and UNICEF publication guidelines.
  • Correct spelling errors and grammar mistakes.
  • Ensure a consistent style and format throughout the document.
  • Maintain the authors’ writing style to the extent possible and practical.
  • Eliminate repetition, redundancies and inconsistencies.
  • Ensure appropriate positioning and numbering of boxes, figures and tables.
  • Use consistent font(s) – as relevant to headings and text and as per the UNICEF Style Book and publication guidelines.
  • Ensure all footnotes, sources, references are complete and consistent.
  • Thorough review of annexes (people consulted and interviewed, bibliography, etc.) to highlight incomplete areas along with consistency in presentation as per UNICEF publication guidelines.
  • Prepare a complete Table of Contents and Acronym List per document.
  • Proofread designed documents to ensure complete print ready files.
  • Produce final version documents ready to be formatted and uploaded on multiple platforms including print, website and social media.

In all written products, the following considerations must be made:

  • Protecting the rights of the child must be given priority above all considerations when collecting and writing stories and other materials.
  • Ensuring clarity, readability, logic, appropriateness as well as engaging writing style in all products.
  • Ensuring language accuracy.
  • Ensure adherence to UNICEF Stylebook and guidelines and alignment with the regional and country programme objectives. (UNICEF Style Book will be provided by the UNICEF Bangladesh Office).
  • Ensuring factual accuracy including accurate representation of the issues and programmes.
  • Be available for feedback and inputs as per the requirements of the office.
  • Be available for several rounds of editing with regards to stories.

C. Deliverables

Highest quality, reader-friendly, edited text content in multiple formats as required.

D. Reporting requirements

Editor will be required to report to Communication Officer/focal point, CAP Section or or relevant programme officer, as required.

E. Payment Schedule

100% of fee on final delivery of assignment.

F. Qualifications or Specialized Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Native English speaker.
  • A minimum of 8 years of proven experience editing and writing reports and other communication materials in English.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills and demonstrated record of producing high-quality editorial work.
  • Advanced University degree in English, communications, journalism, social science, or related field.
  • Additional training in proofreading and editorial writing an asset.
  • Previous experience editing and writing for UNICEF and familiarity with UNICEF’s style guidelines and UN editorial manual highly desirable.
  • Experience or knowledge of UNICEF’s work in Bangladesh and child rights will be an asset.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility.
  • Organizational and coordination skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and to meet tight deadlines to deliver products on time.
  • Professional work ethic, integrity, and initiative.

Candidates must provide the following breakdown of costs (per page is equivalent to 350 words):

  • Per 01-page editing rate
  • Per 10-page editing rate
