Job Context

UNHCR aims to support the covid-19 response of government of Bangladesh by setting up ICU & HDU in sadar hospital, cox’s bazar to provide care to critically ill patients. UNHCR is looking for eligible candidates as part of the HR requirement for ICU & HDU treating critically ill covid-19 patients. staff who will be recruited seconded to Coxbazar sadar hospital.

Job Responsibility

  • To provide effective, efficient and professional clinical intensive care services during contracted sessions as and when required. 
  • To share the ICU on-call roster as determined by the needs of the service. Clinical anaesthesia coverage of the intensive care unit is shared on a rostered 24-hour basis by Anesthetists. Services include anaesthesia in the ICU and HDU.
  • The Anesthetist/Senior ICU consultant will be aware of the role of patient’s rights and ensure treatment of patients of all cultures with dignity and respect and informed consent has been obtained in accordance with hospital policy. 
  • The Anesthetist/ Senior ICU consultant will function as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote high quality outcomes for patients. The Anesthetist/ Senior ICU consultant will consistently demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with other staff and patients and will handle problems sensitively. 
  • The Anesthetist/ Senior ICU consultant will liaise with medical staff in other departments of Sadar Hospital and in other hospitals to ensure that patients are investigated in an appropriate and cost-effective manner. This commitment will include taking part in departmental meetings with other disciplines as required from time to time.
  • Takes an active role to ensure ICU roster is covered and planned, including balancing skill mix and providing coverage of 24/7. The duty hours for this position will be in accordance with GoB HRH policy.  
  • The provision of a consultative service as required. 
  • Experience with ECLS, capable of doing basic ICU invasive and non-invasive procedures (CV line, ETT intubation and managing ventilation independently is mandatory)
  • This will be in accordance with a primary commitment to the intensive care department. 
  • Provides effective leadership and supervisory support to ICU staff.   Will maintain close liaison with ICU In-charge, Director and Deputy Director Hospital. 
  • Consultants should not have any other clinical commitment when covering the ICU during working hours.
  • Strictly adhere to the IPC guidelines and protocols.
  • During working hours, the Anesthetist/ Senior consultant of the ICU should spend the majority of his or her time on the ICU and must always be immediately available on the ICU.
  • An anesthetist/ Senior consultant in ICU must see all admissions to the ICU within twelve hours.
  • There should be a minimum two ICU rounds every day at which an anesthetist/ Senior consultant is present.
  • A handover must occur between the anesthetists/ Senior consultants.
  • All admissions must be discussed with the duty junior ICU consultant/ ICU duty doctors and a management plan drawn up.
  • To provide appropriate and timely advice to the In-charge of Intensive Care on anaesthesia/intensive care matters to ensure the maintenance of professional standards of anaesthesia/intensive care and to promote appropriate service development.

Educational Requirement

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with valid BMDC registration.
  •  Post-graduation degree in anaesthesia or critical care medicine (MD/MS/FCPS).  Or,
  •  Two year’s certified diploma training in intensive care medicine or its equivalent (DA)

Experience Requirement

  • At least three years of work experience in ICU/HDU/CCU/Critical care unit/Emergency unit/Anaesthesia department. 
  •  Experience of work as an in charge of ICU/HDU/CCU/Critical care unit/Emergency unit/Anaesthesia department will be prioritized. 
  •  Knowledge and experience with working in public health sector and in medical emergencies or humanitarian crisis will be added advantages.
  •   Ability to work effectively under pressure in hardship situations and harmoniously within a team of colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.
  •  Ability to work independently under minimal supervision; 
  •  Proficient in the English language.
