Specialist - Ophthalmologist

  Job Responsibility
  • Assess and examine eye patients and provides medical care and specialist consultation, prescribe medication, interpret investigations and treatment in OPD.
  • Manage ophthalmic conditions, considering both the medical and psychological aspects of patient care.
  • Manage regular/periodic satellite outpatient clinics, emergency eye clinics and special eye camp in Camp based IOM health facilities.
  • Carry out daily ward rounds for admitted ophthalmic patients with the support of other medical doctors, and health professionals working in the health complex.
  • Operate equipment such as ophthalmoscopes, slit lamps and lenses.
  • Perform ophthalmic operations, both as scheduled / elective and emergency operations.
  • Carry out eye surgery using, for example, an operating microscope, small incision (keyhole) surgery and laser surgery.
  • Provide advice and reassurance to patients and family members
  • Educate patients to help them understand their medical condition
  • Provide on-the-job training to other health stau and junior doctors on; improved management practices and other quality best practices with the aim of improving patients’ treatment outcomes
  • Supervise and mentor nurses and other mid-level healthcare professionals;
  • Oversee eye health education messages and information packages provided to clients at the facility, also support information and content development to support community awareness partners. Support health information management systems both for
    the MOHFW as well as IOM project; this should include but not limited to documentation and reporting of eye diseases and its information.
  • Attend to eye emergencies by being the first on-call if required.
  • Participate actively in existing health sector coordination mechanisms and liaises with health sector stakeholders to contribute to
  • addressing the unmet needs in eye health,
  • optimizing the allocation of available resources,
  • developing clinical protocols, guidelines and standards;
  • Assist to prepare periodic reports and other requests for information as required
  • Support the schedules and maintenance of medical equipment, surgical suite (theatre), including operating, wash-up, waiting rooms, and anaesthetic and sterilizing equipment.
  • Liaises and coordinates with local Government and health authorities and other stakeholders with a view to strengthening of health care delivery systems
  • Assist the National Programme Ouicer in project monitoring and identifying priority health needs and other activities including but not limited to regular disease outbreak monitoring and reporting to the health authorities and take part in health awareness campaign, etc.
  • Facilitate referrals and assisted transportation of critical cases to functioning secondary/tertiary health facilities or hospitals when required in accordance with organization mandate and procedures directly or through health partners
  • Perform such other duties that may be assigned by the supervisors.
  • Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse
  • Actively promote Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) standards within IOM and amongst beneficiaries served

  Educational Requirement
  • Completed advance university degree in Medicine (MBBS) with a minimum of Post-Graduate qualification in Ophthalmology (DO, MS, FCPS or any equivalent) from an accredited academic institution.
  • In lieu of academic specialized degree, significant years of relevant experience in ophthalmology and eye care intervention with enrolment in post-graduate course could be considered for short-listing.
  Experience Requirement
  • At least three years of experience in Clinical services in Ophthalmology at secondary to tertiary level with Operation Theatre (OT) providing Ophthalmology services;
  • Knowledge and experience with working in the field of public health will be an added advantage;
  • Excellent communication, analytical and interpersonal skills;
  • Working experience in Cox’s Bazar district and/or knowledge of the Undocumented Myanmar Nationals and Rohingya refugees will be considered an advantage.
