Conducting KAP Survey to measure the level of awareness about eye care among person with disabilities and their perspective on how information should be disseminated to them

Background:

The Community Development Centre (CODEC) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Bangladesh that has been working since 1985 to improve the lives of marginalized coastal communities. Originally established to support fisherfolk communities, CODEC has expanded its focus to include education, health, livelihood development, climate resilience, child protection, and emergency response.

CODEC operates in multiple districts across Bangladesh, implementing programs in collaboration with the government, UN agencies, and international development partners. The organization emphasizes community-led development, aiming to empower vulnerable populations, especially women, children, and indigenous groups. Through its strong networks with government bodies, civil society, and donor agencies, CODEC continues to play a significant role in improving social inclusion and economic opportunities for underprivileged communities.

The project, led by Community Development Centre (CODEC) in partnership with CBM Global, aims to establish inclusive eye care services across 3 upazilas of Barishal, namely: Barishal Sadar Upazila, Bakerganj Upazila, Banaripara Upazila. This includes activating vision centers, enhancing the capacity of health professionals, organizing eye-screening camps, and strengthening advocacy initiatives through partnerships with Organization of persons with disabilities (OPDs). It emphasizes building referral systems and conducting awareness campaigns targeting schools and underserved communities Moreover, the project will also focus on the organizational development of OPD’s.

Eye health is a critical component of overall well-being, yet awareness and access to eye care services remain a challenge for persons with disabilities. Understanding their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding eye care is essential to design effective interventions. This study aims to assess the current awareness levels, identify barriers, and provide data-driven recommendations for improving access to eye health services among persons with disabilities

Overall Objective:

To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of persons with disabilities regarding eye care and to understand their preferred methods of receiving information and communication related to eye health services.

Specific Objectives:

  1. To assess the level of knowledge among persons with disabilities about common eye health issues, preventive measures, and available eye care services.
  2. To explore attitudes and beliefs of persons with disabilities towards eye care, including perceived importance, barriers, and cultural or social factors influencing their behavior.
  3. To identify current practices of eye care among persons with disabilities, including healthcare-seeking behavior, frequency of check-ups, and use of assistive technologies or services.
  4. To understand the preferred communication channels and formats for disseminating eye health information to persons with disabilities, considering accessibility and inclusiveness.
  5. To generate evidence-based recommendations for designing inclusive eye health awareness programs tailored to the needs and preferences of persons with disabilities.
