Scope of the Role:
A mushroom tissue culture Lab Incharge  is primarily responsible for supporting lab operations, maintaining sterile conditions, handling lab instruments, mature mushroom harvest, propagating fungal cultures and spawn bag preparation. Their duties involve a mix of technical, operational, and administrative tasks to ensure efficient and contamination-free production.

II. Responsibilities and Tasks:

Responsibility # 1: Core Laboratory Work & Culture Maintenance and Production:

50%

  • Culture Maintenance: Prepare agar media, perform transfers (subculturing), and monitor culture health under sterile conditions.
  • Spawn & Substrate Production: Inoculate sterilized grain or substrate bags to create spawn and fruiting spores.
  • Sterilization: Operate an autoclave to sterilize media, tools, and substrate bags
  • Spawn Media Preparation: Processing spawn bag media materials with maintain proper sterilized for contamination-free spawn bag production.
  • Sterile Aseptic Transfer Technique: The foundational skill to prevent culture loss through performing culture transfers under a laminar flow hood using sterile techniques to maintain culture health and prevent contamination.
  • Media Preparation: Accurately preparing various culture media, solutions, and substrates according to specific recipes and protocols.
  • Inoculation: Inoculating sterilized substrates (e.g., grain, sawdust bags) to produce spawn or fruiting blocks.
  • Monitoring Growth: Regularly observing the progress of fungal cultures, monitoring for any signs of contamination (fungi, bacteria, yeast), and ensuring proper environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) are maintained.
  • Manual Dexterity: Needed for handling fine tools and small samples under a hood for long periods.
  • Organization & Time Management: Essential for managing multiple tasks and meeting production schedules.

 

Responsibility # 2: Laboratory Operations and Maintenance:

15%

  • Sterilization: Operating and maintaining lab equipment, including autoclaves and pH meters, to sterilize media, tools, and waste materials.
  • Cleanliness and Safety: Adhering to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintaining a clean, sterilize equipment, safely dispose of biological waste, organized lab equipments and safe work environment.
  • Inventory Management: Monitoring and managing the inventory of lab supplies, chemicals, spawn, and other materials, and assisting with ordering when necessary.
  • Equipment Care: Maintain laminar flow hoods, autoclaves, and other lab instruments.
  • Troubleshooting: Identifying and reporting problems that might arise, such as contamination issues or equipment malfunctions.

 

Responsibility # 3: Quality Control & Data Management

15%

  • Contamination Checks: Visually inspect cultures for signs of contamination like bacteria or mold.
  • Record Keeping: Accurately log culture details, inventory, and experimental data into databases or spreadsheets.
  • Process Adherence: Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent, high-quality output

 

Responsibility # 4: Documentation and Administration:

15%

  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and detailed records of culture workflows, experimental data, inventory levels, and production details, often using electronic systems or lab notebooks.
  • Data Entry: Accurately entering culture and production data into databases.
  • Collaboration: Working effectively within a team, collaborating with mycologists and other staff, and communicating clearly about project status and needs

 

General Responsibilities on Safety and Security, and Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults

5%

IV. Working Conditions:  

The position is based at the CARE Bangladesh Ukhiya Field Office with regular field visits.

V. Qualification:

  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline; candidates with a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture will be given preference.
  • Minimum of 2 years of proven working experience in Rohingya Camps (mandatory).
  • At least 2 years of experience in implementing agricultural livelihoods programming with national and/or international organizations, including green skills, climate-smart agriculture, market-relevant vocational skills development, youth employment, and market system development within a triple nexus context.
  • Strong experience in training facilitation and conducting community-based sessions.
  • Agriculture-related technical training facilitation skills for Rohingya communities will be considered an added advantage.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, particularly during emergencies and in stressful environments.
  • Good communication skills with demonstrated experience working closely with community members.
  • Proficiency in the local language will be a strong added value.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel, is desirable.
  • Experience in data collection and basic reporting is desirable.
  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to maintain proper documentation and closely monitor field activities.

Compensation

Monthly consolidated salary: 75,000.00 BDT (Negotiable)
