Project Description

As a result of the Rohingya influx to Bangladesh, the population of two Upazilas (sub districts) of Ukhia and Teknaf in the southern part of Cox’s Bazar has risen to an estimated 1.5 million people. This has hugely contributed to existing health and environment challenges, including underfunded and under resourced solid waste management (SWM) services. In the context of Cox’s Bazar, especially accounting for the new influx and the absence of waste management services within the host communities, SWM has strongly emerged as a major public health and environmental concern. Acknowledging the disproportionate or sometime rather complete absence of SWM services compared to solid waste management needs, BDRCS in collaboration with other partners intends to strongly support waste management services in the camps and host communities. The BDRCS as part of its Population movement Operations (PMO) has decided to initiate solid waste management interventions in a phased manner in the selected camps and host community wards. The project intends to create functional models of managing solid waste in Rohingya Camps which can be later sustained through public participation and contributions.
