Job purpose

The Media Development Manager will lead to the design and delivery of effective and imaginative training and outreach materials and activities with diversified target groups. The position aims to increase and promote public interest content around the media ecosystem in Bangladesh, and support media financial viability at the outlet and sectoral level. Besides, S/he will undertake to support technological adaptation in media outputs. This position will also work with media organisations, develop relationships with NGOs/INGOs and government partners, and lead familiarisation, outreach, and training activities with practitioners. The successful candidate will need to work with BBC Media Action’s existing partners to ensure that the media outputs are effectively translating public interest, and audience needs that serve people’s independent decision-making in social and personal spheres. The position is based in Dhaka but with travel to different locations across the country as necessary.

Main Duties & responsibilities

  • Lead multi-programme setting of media development activities, including capacity strengthening with media organisations, ensuring that deliverables are on track, on time, and to the required quality standard.
  • Coordinate and convene among national and local stakeholders from diverse areas that contribute to the independent, public interest, and resilience information ecosystem of Bangladesh. Closely work with civil society organisations with the agenda of pluralistic media practices through capacity strengthening and consultation.
  • Develop and deliver course content, in collaboration with specialists from across the BBC/BBC Media Action, that meets the current and emerging needs of the media/development organisation. This will include the development and design of digital training materials, face-to-face training content, experiential learning, mentoring and coaching programmes.
  • Assess the progress of those taking part in training, formally and informally, ensuring that they know where to find further support according to their needs. To take responsibility for making sure that learning outcomes are clear and that individuals know how to take responsibility for their own continued learning.
  • Interpret and establish training needs with all interested parties and use this knowledge to develop training plans and build solutions using a range of delivery methods.
  • Lead partnership relationships within project team, academy and business associates, key stakeholders and BBC Media Actio client areas. Reporting to manager on an on-going basis.
  • Work with other managers and subject matter specialists in the business to help them develop the skills and capabilities to deliver training and facilitate learning.
  • Be responsible for the production of any reporting documents required.
  • Ensure that all elements of training have clear outcomes, are regularly evaluated and demonstrate clear added value to the BBC Media Action through the appropriate use of KPIs.
  • Analyse training evaluation data and implement changes to delivery as appropriate.
  • For larger training projects or programmes, assist in recruiting training team to ensure the provision of high quality and effective online, face-to-face and virtual classroom training and monitor the quality of their work. A team can be made up of BBC/BBC Media Action staff and/or freelance trainers.
  • Co-ordinate staff, suppliers, budgets and resources for the training project.
  • To comply with the BBC Media Action’s policy on diversity and to apply the principles of the policy when carrying out the role.
  • To ensure that all training delivered is fully accessible to all delegates.
  • To comply with all relevant BBC Media Action safety rules, procedures and guidelines.  To be aware of responsibilities under BBC Media Action safety policies.

In general, regular office hours will apply, but the nature of the role means that a flexible approach to working hours is necessary.

Skills, knowledge and experience requirements

Essential / Desirable
To design, develop and present training sessions on a wide range of subjects within the appropriate discipline, using a range of techniques including digital content, formal presentation and interactive exercises – in groups or one-to-one, remotely or face-to-face.

Knowledge of face-to-face and digital delivery options – able to match the most effective training delivery method to the training need.

Demonstrated expertise in journalism, capacity strengthening, and the media legal environment/media ecosystem, or a strong willingness and ability to quickly learn and excel in these areas.

Strong understanding of partnership with the confidence and ability to deal with a wide range of stakeholders and partners

Experience in documentation and report writing with high standard

Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in a wide range of situations with learners and to interact collaboratively with colleagues in the academy and clients both inside and outside the BBC Media Action.

Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the proven ability to prioritise, work independently and maintain attention to detail.

Well-developed IT skills, including Microsoft Office.

Excellent English and Bangla language skills (written and spoken).

Strong understanding of rights and gender norms within development contexts.

The role may involve working with groups of vulnerable children and adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct.
