Context:

BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. We use media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. We partner with civil society, local media and others to produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues and strengthen the media sector through capacity building. Our work is built on insights from our research and engagement with communities and is focused on three key themes: governance and human rights, health and resilience.

We’re now looking for talented and skillful Assistant Radio Producer to help develop and produce audio outputs for our Rohingya emergency project. Working within a small team, the Assistant Radio Producers will help create range of audio contents (either factual or drama) aimed at both Rohingya people and the host community. All the contents will be made in Chittagonian dialect or Rohingya language. The ideal candidate will have experience of writing, research, recording, editing and delivering high quality, audio-based productions and products.

Overall purpose:

Reporting to the Radio Producer, this position will assist in devising and developing range of audio programmes of different formats and take responsibility to produce allocated packages and programmes within the series, delivering high quality audio output. S/he will be responsible to prepare detailed workplans with feasible timelines for every stage of the production process including research and pre-production, audio recording and post-production. S/he will work within the production team to support the delivery of outputs on time, to budget and in accordance with BBC Media Action’s high creative standards and editorial requirements.

Main Duties & responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the radio producer, content researcher and other creative staff, provide input and ideas to shape the format and structure of audio programmes.
  • Booking resources, facilities, studio time and equipment.
  • Researching and interviewing experts and contributors.
  • Write scripts of allocated radio/audio programmes.
  • Record, edit, mix and deliver audio packages and complete programmes for broadcast.
  • Work within the audio production workflow, ensuring that production tasks take place on time and to the appropriate level of quality.
  • Help to support and guide freelance staff including stringers/reporters, voice artists and presenters.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of training for media-sector partners.
  • Liaise regularly with project team and partners to ensure consistency of message and content across the project.
  • Professionally operate a range of audio equipment to the highest BBC standards.
  • Ensure that BBC editorial principles and all relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements are met through proper sign-off and post-production compliance processes, referring upwards in cases of difficulty or doubt.
  • Develop the flexibility and skills to work with or move to other programme teams on a multi-media basis.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the post as allocated by the line manager.

Experience in radio production, including experience in producing different formats of radio or factual programmes in the studio or on location.

Strong understanding of gender-related needs and concerns within humanitarian and displacement contexts.

Ability to research, write, edit, or adapt programme material for the Bangladeshi market;

In general, normal office hours will apply but the nature of the role means that a flexible approach to working time will be necessary.

The role may involve working with groups of vulnerable children and adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct.
