Context:

BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. We use media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. We partner with civil society, local media and others to produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues and strengthen the media sector through capacity building. Our work is built on insights from our research and engagement with communities and is focused on three key themes: governance and human rights, health and resilience.

For Rohingya Response in Cox’s Bazar, we are currently producing several multimedia outputs and communication tools targeting both Rohingya and host community. Therefore, we are seeking a language specialist to ensure high standard delivery of existing commitments in Rohingya language and to support the team for delivering all outputs in proper Rohingya language for the Rohingya emergency projects.

Overall purpose:

To work within the production team, to ensure that factual audio- visual and social media outputs are delivered in proper dialect and in accordance with cultural context of Rohingya community.  Reporting to the Producer/ Director he or she will be working in different stages of production like script writing, filming/ recording and editing to make sure all the outputs are highest quality of Rohingya language.
Main Duties & responsibilities:

  • To ensure all the contents are produced in proper Rohingya language.
  • To support the production team to ensure that information presented to audiences is accurate and clear.
  • To attend recces, filming locations and self-recording casting activities in order to ensure proper Rohingya dialect.
  • To evaluate research in terms of programme aims and intentions, make preliminary selections and present findings either verbally or in writing to the production team.
  • To suggest strong stories and offer creative and compelling ways of presenting contributors within the programme.
  • To support the development and translation of radio and video scripts and narrations.
  • To help translating teaching, mentoring, and communicating with the Rohingya community. 
  • To source potential contributors for radio and multimedia production.
  • To undertake any other duties assigned by the line manager.

Good communication skills and the ability to establish positive working relations with a wide range of contacts

Good spoken Rohingya language and written Bangla/ English language skills.

Excellent Rohingya language skills (spoken)

A strong understanding of and interest in the social and cultural diversity of Rohingya community

Strong understanding of gender-related needs and concerns within humanitarian and displacement contexts.

Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to form and maintain effective working relationships.

Well-developed IT skills, including Microsoft Office.

The position is based in Cox’s Bazar with travel to Rohingya camps and filming locations across Cox’s Bazar, as necessary. In general, normal office hours will apply but the nature of the role means that a flexible approach to working time will be necessary.
The role may involve working with groups of vulnerable children and adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct. A police background check may form part of the recruitment process. BBC Media Action operates a zero-tolerance policy concerning all forms of abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people.
