Context:

BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. We use media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. We partner with civil society, local media and others to produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues; and strengthen the media sector through capacity building. Our work is built on insights from our research and engagement with communities and is focused on three key themes: governance and rights, health and resilience.

Overall purpose:

The Media Training Officer will work closely with the Senior Producer/Director and other colleagues from project, research and training teams to design and deliver effective and imaginative training and outreach materials and activities with journalists and media houses. The Media Training Officer will also work to develop relationships with NGOs/INGOs and government partners; and lead familiarisation and training activities to media professionals, guiding and mentoring them using BBC Media Action materials and techniques. The position is based in Dhaka but with travel to training locations across the country as necessary. In general, normal office hours will apply but the nature of the role means that a flexible approach to working time will be necessary.

Main Duties & responsibilities:

  • Work with partners to identify key needs in terms of organisational and individual capacity.
  • Working alongside training and research colleagues, design engaging and effective training sessions and training materials (including syllabuses, course structures, session plans and hand out/toolkit materials).
  • Co-ordinate the programme of outreach and training activities, ensuring that deliverables are on track, on time and to the required quality standard.
  • Deliver effective and engaging training for participants from partner organisations, including travel across the whole of Bangladesh as required.
  • Mentor media professionals, ensuring that they receive the support/guidance they need as they roll out their learning in their day-to-day work.
  • Provide timely and accurate forecasting, monitoring and reporting information for training activities and deliverables.
  • Work closely with teams across BBC Media Action Bangladesh to ensure that communication with partners is planned, co-ordinated and effective.

Experience working as a journalist or media content producer, preferably within a news environment.

Good knowledge of news-gathering processes and established reporting and production techniques.

Experiences of working with different multi-media formats.

Experience of partnership working, with the confidence and ability to deal with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.

Experience of designing and delivering face-to-face training programmes, preferably aimed at journalists or other media professionals

Experience and knowledge of informal training methods, including group-work facilitation and participatory approaches

Experience of working in a development or related setting, with an understanding of the needs of socially excluded groups.

Experience of working with people with disabilities and/or other socially excluded groups

Well-developed IT skills, including Microsoft Office.

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to form and maintain effective working relationships at all levels.

Excellent Bangla language skills (written and spoken).

Education background in communication or journalism

The role may involve working with groups of vulnerable children and adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct.
