Hiring for Shojag Shathi Awareness Session Videos
Background:
Shojag (awaken) is a coalition formed in 2017 consisting of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), Naripokkho, and Christian Aid formed with the aim to end gender-based violence at workplace in Bangladesh, especially in the RMG sector. This coalition has implemented two projects since 2017: a) Ending Gender-Based Violence in the Garments Sector and b) Demanding accountability of the corporate actors to ensure the labor and human rights of the workers impacted by COVID the COVID-19-driven economic crisis.
The coalition is almost at the end of a 36-month project co-funded by the European Union titled ‘Promoting gender justice for women workers in the Readymade Garment sector and advocating women's safety during local commute and public spaces in Bangladesh’. The Project intervened at RMG factories; the public sphere (local community and transport); CSO and HRD’s levels, to increase their capacity and awareness to combat inequality for women in the workplace and VAW in public space to bring about systematic change. The project addressed the root causes of GBV, including unequal power relations in the garments sector.
The project successfully identified and trained 475 Shojag Shathi (Human Rights Defenders) from the garment factories covered under the project. These Shojag Sathis, mostly female garment workers, have been equipped with knowledge on legal rights, human rights, and GBV. They are now facilitating sessions in their respective factories, cascading the information they’ve acquired to fellow workers. These sessions provide a platform for dialogue on gender equality, human rights, workplace safety, and related issues. Through these open conversations, female workers are better informed about discrimination, violence, and harassment, leading to empowered individuals who can recognize and address these concerns effectively.
As the project concludes, it is crucial to capture and preserve the impact of these training sessions. Therefore, the training sessions facilitated by Shojag Sathis will be filmed and recorded for future use and dissemination.
