Organisational Context:

Street Child is an international charity, which since its establishment in 2008 has worked with children and their families across Africa and Asia, helping them to break down the barriers that prevent children from going to school and learning. Street Child is dedicated to empowering some of the most vulnerable children in the world by giving them the chance to go to school and giving their families the sustainable means to keep them there. Street Child is supporting partners in Bangladesh to strengthen their capacity and implement projects with the host community in Cox’s Bazar and the Rohingya population. Street Child is currently seeking to expand and advance a series of projects in Bangladesh which work with the most marginalised so that every child’s rights are realised and the barriers to education and protection are removed.

Operational/Context Role:

Street Child is looking for a dedicated Protection Officer for AGRAJATTRA’S new 3-Year child protection project in Cox’s Bazar (Rohingya focused), titled, “Bridging the Gaps: Strengthening Mental Health Support for Children and Young People”. Our planned project has three key components: strengthening the collective resilience of the Rohingya community, strengthening the individual resilience of children and adolescents, and expanding access to mental health services through the provision of psychosocial support and case management for children in need and at risk.

The main responsibility of Protection Officer will be to provide technical support to strengthen our local partner Agrajattra’s safeguarding and organisational capacity as per project assigned. The Protection Officer will be responsible for safeguarding training to all staff, partner’s capacity development delivery, monitoring, impact assessment and reporting. In addition to the Protection Officer will be required to perform other ad hoc duties assigned by Street Child.

Key Responsibilities and Requirements:

1. General

  • Undertake a rapid capacity assessment of our local partner’s safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Develop safeguarding mechanism for local partners and strengthen systems, processes, and culture if and where necessary.
  • Plan and develop safeguarding training content for all staff and ensure safeguarding training for all staff.
  • For the ‘Bridging the Gap’ project, collaborate with training officer for case managers training design and delivery.
  • For the ‘Bridging the Gap’ project, design and develop a work plan for an adolescent’s participatory action research initiative.
  • For the ‘Bridging the Gap’ project, conduct field visits to meet with persons of concern within the community in need of internal and/or external services.
  • Develop a capacity development plan with clear deliverables and impact indicators with our local partner.
  • Deliver the capacity development plan through a mixture of active coaching, workshops and trainings, peer-to-peer learning through direct support of partner and collaboration with Street Child’s regional resources and networks.
  • Participate in protection and/or coordination meetings with other stakeholders upon request of the Team Manager.
  • Ensure PSEA and Child Safeguarding standards are upheld.
  • Other duties as assigned by Street Child.

2. Reporting

  • Keep Street Child team informed; planning and reporting on a monthly basis.
  • Keep the ‘Bridging the Gaps’ Project Coordinator informed on the activities of the project by providing relevant correspondence, reports and meeting minutes as well as making regular updates.
  • Monitor and evaluate delivery of capacity development plan as per impact indicators, and document best practice including lessons learnt.

Qualifications, Experience and Technical Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Social Science subject or equivalent; Master’s degree will be an advantage.
  • Previous experience of working with non-governmental organization, UN or local Organization.
  • At least one year working experience as Protection Officer.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with marginalized communities.
  • Experience in child protection in protracted crisis/early recovery a significant advantage.
  • Experience working in Rohingya camps is a significant advantage.
  • Experience in coordinating and delivering trainings.
  • Computer skills (MS Office package - including Excel - both in English and Bangla)
  • Strong analytical, reporting, strategic thinking and planning skills.
  • Strong protection knowledge and safeguarding mechanism.
  • Experience of liaison with a range of different stakeholders.

Language

  • Fluency in English and Bangla (written and spoken) and excellent writing skills.
  • Rohingya or Chittagonian language skills is a significant advantage.

Salary: Negotiable

Terms and Conditions: Contract is for six (6) months and may be extended based on proved experience and results.
