Nutrition Specialist (1 Position)


The Nutrition Specialist is to provide leadership and high-quality scientific advice on human nutrition in support of (i) achieving nutrition outcomes from the inclusive aquaculture sector growth through a market system approach within the Feed the Future Bangladesh Aquaculture and Nutrition Activity (BANA); and (ii) ensuring effective collaboration with WorldFish projects in Bangladesh to contribute to wider USAID, WorldFish and CRP FISH goals for improving nutrition through aquaculture and agriculture investments in the country.

The incumbent is responsible to work towards achieving the following BANA’s objectives on nutrition:

  1. Increase nutritional awareness and practices (consumption of nutritious food, dietary diversity and hygiene practices) at household level through social and behavior change communication (SBCC) programs.
  2. Improve access to diverse and nutritious foods through nutrition sensitive fish production systems (mola-carp polyculture) along with pond dike cropping and homestead gardening.
  3. Develop and market affordable, nutritious, safe and ready to cook/eat fish and fish products.
  4. Create a national mass media campaign in order to challenge negative consumer attitudes to tilapia and other farmed fish and generally promote the benefits of fish consumption.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the package of interventions supported by the BANA maximizes its chances of achieving the ultimate objectives of improving the dietary diversity, food security, nutrition, and health, particularly among smallholder farm households and vulnerable groups including young children, pregnant and lactating women
  • Ensure necessary quality and technical guidance of BANA team and partners in the implementation of project activities related to nutrition (including developing and strengthening behaviour change communication activities, action research on nutrition, and finding innovative strategies to reduce gender disparities in food access and consumption)
  • Provided direction in integrating gender messaging into nutrition related behaviour change communications through mass media and other means
  • Facilitate nutrition-sensitive market system program in terms of crops selection, post-harvest handling and processing
  • Provided guidance to scale-up of proven homestead nutrition-sensitive aquatic agri-food systems in the Feed the Future ZOI
  • Strengthen monitoring systems and design and conduct evaluations to maximize learning from the project and ensure accountability to stakeholders with reference to USAID indicators
  • Prepare annual workplan and budget for implementation of the nutrition components of the BANA, in collaboration with market system and Monitoring Evaluation and Learning team and partners
  • Capacity building at local levels will target private partners, NGOs and associated stakeholders.
  • Ensure effective coordination among the Feed the Future partners, implementing private partners of BANA, the health department of government, and relevant projects implemented by WorldFish in Bangladesh. Provide technical support, and ensure effective cross-program learning is captured and necessary quality in research design is implemented
  • Develop and strengthen partnerships with collaborating organizations including the Feed the Future partners, CRP FISH, national research institutions and universities and private partners
  • Provide technical assistance to the nutrition partners for designing  nutritional interventions focusing on food security and nutritional awareness and practices
  • Prepare progress reports on activities and outcomes for BANA
  • Prepare scientific publications, working papers, presentations and other science-based communication and learning products.
  • Represent WorldFish in various inter/national nutrition events

This job is open to Bangladesh nationals with the following skills and qualifications:

  • Excellent knowledge and technical skills related to human nutrition/health and food security and demonstrated ability to perform critical thinking on research issues, with three years of relevant research experience including experience working in developing country settings.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills
  • Experience in designing research studies and analyzing quantitative data using statistical analysis software
  • Interest in working across disciplines to develop innovative metrics for understanding linkages between agriculture, food systems, and nutrition and finding novel ways to enhance the “nutrition-sensitive” effects of agriculture/aquaculture

Experience Required

  • Minimum 7 years working experience in nutrition and/or public health sector; experienced candidates of 10 years more will be given preferences

Educational Requirement

  • PhD/Master’s degree in Nutrition and food science or relevant discipline.

Desired Skills and Qualification

  • History of own publications related to human nutrition, especially from developing country settings
  • Basic understanding of market system development principles, approach, applications and challanges
  • Working experience in Bangladesh and South Asia 
  • Experience using qualitative research methods
  • Familiarity with agricultural/aquaculture programs
  • Experience in working with Government collaboration program 

Salary and Benefits

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position with annual salary ranging between BDT 1,213,305 to BDT 1,249,704 per annum. WorldFish's NRS shall receive comprehensive benefits including (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff.

Our offer

This position will be based at WorldFish’s country office in Dhaka, Bangladesh with extensive field visit. Only shortlisted candidate will be notified and expected to attend the interview. The successful candidate should be available to commence in September 2018 for an initial 2.5 years contract, with the possibility of contract renewal depending on performance and funding situation.
