Research Associate (1 Position)


WorldFish,  Bangladesh  and  South  Asia  is  hiring  Research Associate  funded  by  USAID  called ‘ECOFISH’ in order to meet its vision: “Be the research partner of choice, delivering high impact, transformative and equitable fisheries and aquaculture solutions to reduce poverty and malnutrition in Bangladesh and South Asia”. The key objective of the ECOFISH-BD project is to improve the resilience of the Meghna River ecosystem and livelihoods of communities reliant on the coastal fishery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with WorldFish staff on other research projects.
  • Assist WorldFish and Department of Fisheries in monitoring and data-collection activities in coastal and riverine environments. This will include fish catches (especially Hilsa) and other fish biodiversity, and fishing activity.
  • Develop effective adaptive co-management with fishing communities, relevant law-enforcing agencies, and government bodies at local, regional, and national scales.
  • Assist District and Upazila Fisheries Officers and Community Leaders to undertake socio-economic and ecological surveys.
  • Assist in the implementation of the project program on women empowerment and livelihood diversification.

This job is open to Bangladesh nationals with the following skills and qualifications:

  • Experience of capture fisheries, co-management, and socio-economic aspects of fisheries.
  • Excellent proficiency of spoken and written English with strong research and writing skills.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision, setting work priorities, solving problems, and making timely and appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to both work in and lead team under your supervision
  • Committed and motivated
  • Able to undertake regular field work, traveling by motorbike/ boat.

Desired Skills and Qualification

  • Knowledge of ecosystem services analysis and mechanisms for Payments for Environmental Services (PES); adaptive co-management; micro finance; conservation planning.
  • Driving licence.
  • Willingness to undertake field work at river, coastal sea.

Experience Requirement

Minimum 7 years work experience in natural resources management, environmental monitoring, wildlife conservation or similar areas.

Education Requirement

MS/ MSc in Fisheries Science, Marine Science, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology or similar discipline.

Salary and Benefits

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position with annual salary ranging between BDT 957,794 to BDT 1,016,124 per annum.

WorldFish's NRS shall receive comprehensive benefits including (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, and pension / provident fund contribution.
