Position: Project Engineer (Water)

Context:

The French NGO Eau et Vie (French for Water & Life) has created the NGO Water & Life Bangladesh and a social business Shobar Jonno Pani Ltd.

The overall objective of E&V is to improve the living conditions of low income communities in depressed urban areas of Bangladesh based on water supply, sanitation service, solid waste management, Firefighting and Hygiene promotion. Thus, W&L and SJP work in close collaboration to implement the program. W&L ensures the implementation of the Water network installation, sanitation & social activities (Hygiene promotion, Fire-fighting, Solid waste management, social survey), while SJP sets up, maintains and operates the water supply network in the targeted areas.  The scheme provides metered household connections to slum dwellers with reliable and good quality water, with full recovery of revenues by WASA. This is the first time in Bangladeshi slums that water is provided through household connection and based on a social enterprise model. Both W&L and SJP engaged in partnerships with the local communities, authorities, water operator and other development stakeholders.

Position:  Project Engineer (Water)

Location: Bhashantek, Dhaka; with frequent field trips (Dhaka and Chittagong)

Reporting to:  Country Director or Program Manager SJP

Operational Monitoring of: Plumbers’ Team, Site Foreman

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Operational Monitoring of the technical team: 
  • Plans the activities and define the priorities of the technical team
  • Supervises and assist the plumbers and helpers for the construction and maintenance of the water network and sanitation projects in Bangladesh.
  • Supervises the Water quality test on a regular basis.
  • Determines the humans resources needed for construction works 
    Technical:
  • Prepares the design of water network and sanitation projects on Autocad (or any other drawing software) based on mapping surveys.
  • Creates and updates GIS databases.
  • Prepares the BoQ and the budget of construction works
  • To give suggestions about how the installation and the project can be improved with the available means.
  • To provide accurate analysis in WASH aspects in regard to the context, practices, technology used and recommended approach.
  • To assist with the quotations and purchases of materials and to follow up.
  • To monitor technological developments in WASH field on regular basis. 
    Logistics: 
  • Ensures that the stock of construction materials is clean and organized.
  • Keeps track of the stock through record keeping (stock register) and physical counts.
  • Ensure with support of Site foreman timely orders for the missing materials so that these can be delivered on time.
  • To be responsible for maintaining the tools in good working order and if necessary prepare an order for replacement.
  • To involve the plumbers in this task and teach them how to maintain a stock so that at the end of the installation, the plumbers can take over this responsibility without any problem.
    Reporting:
  • To prepare a monthly report about the technical activities: progress of works, number of connections, problems encountered, possible solutions, planning of next month, etc. and send it to the manager.
  • To make an activity report at the end of any installation.
  • When required, to assist with any other task that is needed and demanded by the supervisor.

Qualification:

    Education: Minimum B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (can be relaxed for exceptional candidates)
    Experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience.
  • Proven experience in the use of AutoCAD is a MUST
  • Ability to use GIS software
  • Experience in WASH sector is desired
  • Must have experience in Site Supervision
  • Proven experience in Water Quality Tests
    Age: 35-40 years
    Skills
  • Sound knowledge about design and maintenance of piped water network.
  • Knowledge about Water Quality Parameters and Water Treatment for drinking purposes.
  • Proven computer skills (MS Word, Excel, drawing software)
  • Ability to use water quality test (Wagtech kits)
  • Proficient in both spoken and written English
  • Team management and planning skills
  • Strong team motivation and social work minded
  • Dynamic
