PROJECT MANAGER

for a project dealing with WASH for industrial workers in different areas in Bangladesh

The WASH for industrial workers project of WaterAid Bangladesh is aiming to improve access to water and sanitation services and promotion of safe hygienic practices among the workers and their families living in different industrial areas in Bangladesh.  In addition, the projects will also work with the schools and health centres in the respective project areas to improve their WASH facilities. The project will also act on influencing respective authorities/factory owners and their associations to improve WASH compliances in both factories and respective locations.

The position is responsible for leading and implementation of the project through partner organisations  as a part of urban programme of WaterAid. Other key responsibilities entail project  monitoring ; compliance check ; advocacy and networking with corporate sector, regulatory authorities, instutions like BGMEA/BKMEA/DOE, local government institutes (LGIs) and duty bearers; capacity building of implementing partners and major stakeholders etc. The Project Manager will also take initiatives for scaling up and seeking further opportunities for similar interventions in line with WaterAid’s Country Programme Strategy. S/he will represent WaterAid in different platforms and meetings participated by NGOs/INGOs, UN bodies and other organisations from international development community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading the implementing process of specific projects related to WASH for industrail workers and their families in the respective areas in Bangladesh.
  • Contributing the process of developing new project proposal, identification of new project areas, selecting new partner organizations and right holders etc.
  • Ensuring projects designing, planning and budgeting in line with the Country Programme Strategy and Guidelines of the organization and donor’s requirement.
  • Monitor progress of implementation and take necessary corrective measures.
  • Conducting continuous review of partners progress against plan, identify the loopholes, provide appropriate feedback & support to ensure smooth and effective implementation of the programme.
  • Coordinating with other teams of WaterAid Bangladesh to ensure providing necessary support to the partner organizations on their needs.
  • Facilitating the process of advocacy issues especially WASH compliances at factories and specific location by networking and alliance buildings with relevant stakeholders.
  • Advocating policy influencing works in coordination with other Teams of WaterAid.
  • Building capacity of relevant WASH actors and relevant staff of partner organizations on urban issues through appropriate development initiatives.
  • Facilitating knowledge management process for the respective projects in terms of documentation good practices, learning and cases.
  • Submission of Reports to different audiences in time.

Person specification:

  • Masters or equivalent degree in any discipline preferably in Business Administration, social sciences, gender studies, development studies, civil engineering from any recognized University. Higher academic achievements will be given priority.
  • At least 8 years job experience in development field with 4 years in programme/ project management. Working with CSR issues and experiences of corporate sector on leading development projects will get preference.
  • Experience in project management i.e. project development, planning, budgeting, implementation and monitoring particularly in urban context.
  • Understanding of technical, social and institutional issues relating to water, sanitation and hygiene education in developing countries.
  • Understanding on international and local compliances of business/offshore businesses.
  • Understanding of international labor issues and also the labour law and industrial sector in context of Bangladesh.
  • Knowledge on environment and industrial pollution.
  • Expertise in partnership management and development issues.
  • Demonstrated leadership skill, organizing & problem solving abilities, articulation of goals and action plans, demonstrate gender and cultural awareness.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation, collaboration and report writing skills.
  • Able to plan, priorities and organize self and others, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Competent to make effective decisions, uphold organizational values, promote integrity and advance organizational mission and vision.
  • Must be a person who is self-motivated with good interpersonal skills and capacity to understand and walk with people from all walks of life.
  • Able to contribute in the regional and global platforms within and outside WaterAid

Reportable to : Head of Programmes
Work station : Dhaka, Bangladesh with extensive travel to project sites
Working hours : Full time (05 days in a week with minimum 37.5 hours per week)

Duration   Initially for 2 years with a possibility of further extension depending on project extension
