Bangladesh Country Director at Campaign for Tobacco Free-Kids in Dhaka

Summary Description

The Director will provide strategic direction and coordinate CTFK’s advocacy efforts at the national and subnational level in Bangladesh in support of tobacco control policy change. S/he will serve as a direct contact for CTFK with various ministries and authorities of the central and local government.  S/he will help facilitate development and implementation of an overall advocacy strategy in Bangladesh to move policy goals by working closely with local partners involved in tobacco control.  In developing the core strategy, the Director will identify key political actors, conduct comprehensive political mapping, and build and maintain relations with key Bangladesh officials.

The ideal candidate will have a record of strong leadership skills and have experience in conceptualizing and implementing policy change campaigns.  S/he will have knowledge of the Bangladesh government processes and ideally a background in public health; proven ability to develop and work in partnership with multi-stakeholders; strong project/program management skills and demonstrated ability in managing multi-locational teams.  S/he should have experience in dealing with senior government and political leadership.   This is a full time position and will be based in Dhaka.

The Director will report to the Director of South Asia Programs at CTFK.

Primary Duties:

  • Apply a strong working knowledge of the Bangladesh political and administrative systems, process and players to identify opportunities to advocate for changes in central policies especially as relates to increasing taxation on all tobacco products and implementing effective tobacco control measures
  • Develop and implement  advocacy strategies related to all policy goals and build and maintain relations with key governmental officials and political leaders
  • Strategic planning and coordination with Bangladesh advocates to promote policy change
  • Develop and implement campaigns to expose the tobacco industry efforts to undermine existing laws and public health goals
  • Identify and work with potential partners to develop grant proposals for  policy change and implementation and work with current grantees on the execution of advocacy campaigns
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to partners/grantees for advocacy activities for raising taxes, implementation of law and policy advocacy.  
  • Undertaking regular field visits to the partners for guiding them in carrying out their project activities
  • Coordinate with media, research and legal teams to support policy goals.
  • Work collaboratively with partners in the Bloomberg Initiative and Washington D.C. based Bangladesh team
  • Prepare detailed monthly, quarterly and other reports on progress based on partners’ inputs.
  • Manage Dhaka based team and partners
  • Any other task that may be assigned by the TFK Director of South Asia Region

Required Skills:

  • Minimum 15 years related policy advocacy and management experience
  • Strong understanding of government processes
  • Master’s degree in public health, management, law, social science or related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Bangla.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling multiple projects and deadlines
  • Interest in public health, commitment to public interest work, and international experience a plus
