Job Profile: Field Assistant

Introduction

Solidaridad Network Asia is a global network organization working on sustainable, resources-efficient and inclusive supply chains. Solidaridad is working across 37 countries through 9 Regional Excellence Centre’s, and facilitating development of socially responsible, ecologically sound, and profitable supply chains. In Bangladesh, Solidaridad introduced sustainable aquaculture innovative for integrated water management and the plantation of mangroves in the polders of Bangladesh to restore local resilient livelihoods, contributing to food security, and various eco-system services in the context of poverty, delta dynamics and climate change. Mangroves improve water quality, sequester carbon, provide habitat for aquatic animals, trap sediments, and contribute to coastal protection. This building-with-nature approach aims to positively impact on food security and livelihoods of coastal shrimp farming communities. Project provided support to increased capability of smallholder farmers and their households living in polders of tropical deltas to combat salinization and secure their livelihood and well-being through adopting resilient shrimp culture system. Project also facilitate climate smart shrimp culture in 100 hectares of land to enhance shrimp yields through better land-use and water management. Project also introduced integrated model for mangrove –shrimp production systems where probiotics and other components contribute to improved shrimp productivity and create other livelihood options.

Overall Job Description

The Field Assistants are mainly responsible for ensuring effective implementation and management of all the project interventions in the field at Upazila level to achieve the objectives of Mangrove-Polders project. Specially, responsible to look after the mangrove piloting ponds and mangroves that have been established in Debhata and Paikgacha Upazila and also mobilize the shrimp farmers to improve their livelihood through mangrove use. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to join Solidaridad Network Asia, Bangladesh that contributes from national to international context through market oriented approach, innovation, data, evidence and learning.

The position will be based in Khulna/ Satkhira and will report to the Programme Officer- Research & Development and maintain close coordination with other team members.  

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Stay in the field is mandatory to look after the mangrove ponds and mangroves,
  • Preparation of weekly personal plan followed by monthly implementation plan,
  • Implement the project activities at field/ Upazila level,
  • Collect quantitative and qualitative data regularly to facilitate/ assist the research activities,
  • Arrange monthly meeting of the mangrove and control farmers at upazila level and assist the farmers to prepare the meeting notes,
  • Provide support to farmers for maintaining farm record book and record keeping for all the project interventions
  • Update the farmers’ data base regularly
  • Providing follow-up services to monitor and ensure whether the recommendations are carried out during implementation of the project interventions,
  • Keep liaison with the SaFaL Shrimp Farmers Service Center, collection centers, Lead Farmers, etc.,
  • Organizing and preparing arrangements for training and workshops for the project participants At Upazila level,
  • Track and documentation the progress of project activities and preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual report,
  • Preparing good practice dissemination notes based on the experience gained from mangrove piloting site,
  • Any other tasks assigned by the ARF Project authority.

Education/Experience and Skills

  • The candidate must have at least a diploma degree in Aquaculture/Agriculture. The terms and condition can be flexible for the experienced candidates.
  • At least 1 year of experience specially in the field of research related to mangrove ecosystem, fisheries, etc.
  • Preferably 1 year of professional experience in the field of development projects.
  • Knowledge of aquaculture extension techniques, livelihoods approaches, land and water management;
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively, and to write clearly and concisely.
  • Have knowledge about MS office word, excel and power point

  • Effective and efficient communication skills.
