SEAF Ventures Management LLC (the “Company”) is a subsidiary of Small Enterprise Assistance Funds (“SEAF”), a U.S. based fund manager that invests in small and medium enterprises (“SMEs”) in emerging markets, with a presence in 22 countries globally. The Company manages an investment fund, SEAF Bangladesh Ventures LLC (“SEAF BV”), which provides growth capital to SMEs in Bangladesh.

 
Managing Director
 

Position Description
SEAF is looking to hire a committed and experienced individual to fill one of two slots as Managing Director for SEAF Ventures Management Ltd in Dhaka. The successful candidate will share with the existing Managing Director  overall responsibility for SEAF’s Bangladesh investment activities including but not limited to developing SEAF BV’s investment pipeline, sourcing and appraising new investment opportunities, structuring and executing investments, developing new business initiatives, managing (including investor and development impact reporting) the investment portfolio of SEAF BV, staff management and recruitment, budgets, financial control and compliance with and promotion of SEAF policies and procedures.  The existing portfolio will remain largely the responsibility of the existing Managing Director; however, the successful candidate will be expected to assist with this task as may be appropriate. As his or her unique responsibility, the successful candidate will be responsible for SEAF BV’s communications with stakeholders including SEAFBV’s shareholders and with liaising fund raising activities with SEAF. This position will report to the responsible officer at SEAF Global.   All qualified candidates are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities

  • In conformity with SEAF’s policies and the terms of the Fund Management Agreement and the objectives of the Fund, source, identify, and screen potential new investment opportunities by leveraging relationships with key referral sources, including own network, chambers of commerce, trade associations, consultants and financial intermediaries
  • Promote the Company and SEAF BV and build and maintain relationships with key sources of deal flow, including appropriate chambers of commerce, trade associations, and other relevant organizations and individuals
  • Conduct preliminary screening of new opportunities, and develop investment theses
  • Perform detailed due diligence on investment opportunities, including collection and review of operating, financial, and industry information
  • Identify appropriate investment instruments and negotiate terms and structure with potential investees
  • Assess investees’ compliance with the International Finance Corporation (“IFC”) Environmental, Social & Governance (“ESG”) standards and supervise corrective actions, as required
  • Prepare and present investment proposals to SEAF’s Global Investment Committee for decision
  • Oversee the preparation and execution of legal documentation, with assistance from external counsel
  • Ensure the implementation of all investment terms
  • Enhance the value of the Fund’s investments by influencing the investee companies to achieve the strategic objectives outlined in the investment thesis
  • Monitor the investment portfolio through exit or liquidation, by supervising the collection of operational and financial information from investee companies, and provision of advisory services
  • Serve as key contact for and as appropriate, Board Member / Advisory Member, of investee companies
  • Advise investee companies on ways to enhance their value and attractiveness to possible exit targets and / or to enhance the investee company’s capacity to repay loans
  • Develop and implement new business initiatives for the Company, including expanding the Company’s profile
  • Co-manage a local team of experienced investment, finance, accounting and administrative professionals 
  • Prepare, with the assistance of SEAF’s Global Portfolio Management team, quarterly investor reports and portfolio valuations in compliance with SEAF policies and International Private Equity & Venture Capital (“IPEV”) Reporting and Valuation Guidelines
  • Liaise with SEAF’s Global Investment Committee to assist in investor relations and fund-raising
  • Expanding the Company’s profile, increasing market presence, and organizing special events in order to achieve the Company’s objectives
  • In coordination with SEAF HQ, maintaining external communications and media relations
  • Keeping good relationship and working with Govt. Departments /Ministries, Bangladesh Bank (BB), Bangladesh Securities & Exchange Commission (BSEC), Registrar of Joint Stock Companies & Firms (RJSCF), development partners and other corporate entities operating in the financial sector in Bangladesh
  • Ensure that the Company’s activities are in compliance with local regulations and laws at all times
  • Co-develop and achieve fund raising, budget and investment objectives

Skills

The successful candidate will show general competence in all, and exceptional competence in some of the following skills:

  • Outstanding leadership skills with ability to command the respect of team members and build confidence with SEAF’s Global Investment Committee and shareholders
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a strong professional network, in Bangladesh and ideally in the South Asia region
  • Marketing expertise in order to distribute the Fund’s products in a manner that achieves the objectives of the Fund, SEAF and the Company
  • Strong business judgment and analytical skills, and  a thorough understanding of industry dynamics, and financial and other business fundamentals
  • Organized in thought and action in order to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines simultaneously and systematically
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically to recognize opportunities within the Company’s objectives and mission and to advise and assist investee companies to achieve these strategic objectives
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and excellent written,  verbal and presentation skills in English and Bengali, with the ability to communicate persuasively and factually with all stakeholders
  • Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office suite with the capacity to learn SEAF’s internal IT systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently but at the same time be a positive and contributing member to a global network

Experience
The ideal candidate will have:

  • 10 to 15 years of relevant experience, including in Bangladesh
  • Relevant experience may include, but not is limited to, business development, consulting, banking, and financial services (especially in private equity and venture capital investment management)
  • At least 5 years of experience in developed markets (US / UK / EU/ AUS) and at least 5 years of experience in Bangladesh

Academic Background

  • Preferred Educational Qualification: Master of Business Administration (MBA), or Master of Arts in Marketing/ Finance/ Economics;
  • Candidates having earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), or BA/BCom in Economics, Marketing, and/or Finance or having relevant work experience will also be considered for the position.
