Grant for Leprosy Research

Advocacy for Empowerment Project (AEP) is an ongoing project is implemented by The Leprosy Mission International Bangladesh (TLMIB). TLMIB is an international organization dealing with causes and consequences of leprosy in collaboration with the GOB run the National Leprosy Elimination Program (NLEP), ranging from health and development of advocacy and community empowering. Under the AEP project, The Leprosy Mission is looking for suitable and qualified research institution/University/College/research professionals to carry out research on leprosy that will contribute to TLM vision on “Leprosy Defeated, Lives Transformed” Nationally and internationally. The interested organizations/institutions are requested to submit proposal or abstract following below requirement.    

TLMIB Background and History
The Leprosy Mission is an international Christian organization working with and for people affected by leprosy. Founded in 1874, The Leprosy Mission (TLM) is the oldest and largest leprosy-focused organization in the world today. TLM has been working in Bangladesh since 1991 as TLMI Bangladesh (TLMIB). TLMIB is working in the arena of community based rehabilitation, leprosy control, mainstreaming disability, advocacy and research with the aim to eradicate the causes and consequences of leprosy. TLMIB is now implementing 22 projects under 6 programs across 24 districts in 6 divisions of Bangladesh. TLMIB has targeted the most vulnerable, excluded and discriminated groups, especially the people affected by leprosy and disability.

TLMIB has long experience in the field of Leprosy research.  With more than 60 international scientific articles generated and six PhD theses on studies based at northern Nilphamari, the leprosy research of TLMIB in Bangladesh has given much to the world. However, TLMIB is now implementing 4 research projects in Nilphamari district.

Eligible Criteria:

  • Abstract needs to be submitted through a Medical college/ university, public/ private university (general), health and social institutions (individual application will be not accepted).
  • The subject of the research shall be on leprosy treatment or /and socioeconomic aspects of people affected by leprosy, disability resulting leprosy or other Neglected Topical Diseases (NTDs)  e.g. treatment, management, social stigma, rights, rehabilitation, integration with GOB , integration with general health services, GoB policy for leprosy and NDT etc.
  • The maximum duration of the research should be in12 months.
  • The applicant will be responsible to show evidence that they have obtained ethical approval from   their local instituitonal review board or relevant national research council and publish research finding in the journal(as  applicable)
  • TLMIB will contribute 75% of the total cost of the research, but within the limit of BDT: 100,000.00 (maxim).   This may be as one grant or up to 3 smaller grants.
  • The principal investigator should have a research background and affiliated with inistitution.

Application Guidelines:
We welcome your most innovative ideas and encourage you to submit an abstract / proposal that needs to be addressed:

  • Title of the research project, objectives, brief summary of the project, justification of the study, study design, details of methodology and analysis, plan of operation and timeline
  • Name and designation of Principal and co-Investigator, Institution responsible for the research project - address and contact person,
  • Detailed budget and request from TLMIB
  • How researchers and TLMIB will be benefited from this research, and how people affected by leprosy might benefit from this research
  • How leprosy affected people will have  participated in the design or implementation of research project
  • CV of the team and previous research experiences (if any).
  • The proposal should not be more than 5 pages
