‘Developing Midwives Project’ (DMP) of BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (BRAC JPGSPH) of BRAC University (BRACU) envisions a healthcare system that reaches poor communities in Bangladesh’s remote locations. The vision conceptualises midwife as the key person in lessening maternal and neonatal mortality. Therefore, to develop competent and compassionate midwives, DMP launched ‘Diploma in Midwifery’ programme in 2012 as the country’s first private-sector midwifery education. Initially funded by UK Government and now alongside BRAC, this initiative is assisted by the MPH programme of BRACU. Approved by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) and accredited by Bangladesh Nursing & Midwifery Council (BNMC), BRACU’s midwifery education is being implemented in seven academic sites in rural and urban locations of six Districts.
