About Girl Effect

We’re a creative non-profit - experts in media, mobile, brand and international development - working where girls are marginalised and vulnerable.

We build youth brands and mobile platforms that millions of girls and boys love and interact with. From apps that build skills, to TV dramas that explore vital issues, to magazines written and distributed by girls. Our work enables girls to express themselves, value themselves and build the relationships they need - empowering them to change their lives.

Girl Effect began as a movement in 2008, founded and championed by NIKE Foundation and multiple partners. With the support of over 150 partners in 90 countries, NIKE Foundation and Girl Effect have positively impacted the lives of millions of girls and influenced global investment in them.

We became an independent organisation in September 2015, with continued multi-year funding from the NIKE Foundation and multiple, high profile partners. With a new CEO from the global creative industry and an ambitious strategy, the moment is now to build irreversible momentum for girls.

What we Do

Mass media brands. We build mass media brands, with mobile interactivity and the use of ‘safe spaces’ that engage girls and key influencers in their lives to effect social norm change, breaking down barriers that prevent girls from accessing the services and support they need to progress. By doing this, we enable girls to have a voice in determining their future and make choices that have a direct impact in unleashing their potential.

It’s a fresh approach to international development but one that is gaining ground and has captured the interest of investors and the development world alike.

Based in London, we have much loved and highly regarded brands in Ethiopia and Rwanda, new collaborations in Nigeria and plans to launch new brands in Malawi, Indonesia and India in 2017.

Springster: Our mobile platform, Springster, in partnership with Facebook, in now live in over 40 countries in 24 languages.

TEGA: TEGA is a girl-operated mobile-enabled research tool that delivers accurate rapid insight into girls’ lives.

When it comes to understanding girls and attitudes to girls in hard to reach communities, conventional research methods have limitations.
TEGA uses certified data-collection techniques and mobile technology to teach girls aged 17-24 how to collect meaningful, honest data about their world in real time. The data they collect can be translated and analysed within 15 minutes of being uploaded. TEGA’s bespoke research qualification equips girls with employable skills for the future, and it provides us and partners with authentic peer-to-peer insights to inform our work.
