Purpose of the Position
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is seeking a Communications Manager for the Population Movement Operations (PMO) in Cox’s Bazar.
The role of the Communications Manager is to support the PMO under the supervision and guidance of the Communications Delegate and/or Head of Sub Office. The Communications Manager operates in pursuit of goals identified in Strategy 2020 and supports the population movement operation. The principal aim of the communications unit is to ensure that the Red Cross Red Crescent humanitarian response is professionally communicated, understood and supported by internal and external stakeholders. The communications unit also positions the IFRC as a key humanitarian leader and actor; profiles the achievements of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS); helps build communications capacity of IFRC’s members and highlights proposed solutions to humanitarian challenges.
Communicating with key audiences is critical for maintaining and growing public, government and donor support, both locally and internationally. IFRC communications efforts are focused on highlighting the humanitarian needs on the ground and securing positive positioning for the response efforts of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) and Movement partners.
Maintaining a steady flow of timely and accurate public information focusing on the humanitarian needs and the Movement response is vital to support effective resource mobilisation efforts and enhance collaboration with key partners and stakeholders. The work programme includes proactive engagement with international and local media, social media, talking points, press releases, photos and raw video.
The Communications Manager will be responsible for the following activities:
- Developing communications plans, activities and materials that support the roll-out of external and internal communications initiatives, campaigns and key calendar events by identifying and producing high quality communications content (media pitches and support for interviews, social media, talking points, press releases, key messages, photos and raw video etc.) to support positive positioning for the response efforts of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), IFRC and Movement partners;
- Building and maintaining good working relationships with IFRC colleagues, the BDRCS and ICRC and partners national societies. Keep close coordination with IFRC and BDRCS teams in Dhaka;
- Integrating and scaling-up digital technologies and social media into IFRC communications and community engagement efforts, operations and programmes, to enhance organisational understanding of the strategic value of social media, fostering a “digital culture”;
- Media scanning and monitoring;
- Collaborating to identify and address reputational issues;
- Contributing to capacity-building of BDRCS counterparts including colleagues in IFRC and BDRCS and BDRCS’ volunteers.
- Coordinating and updating public and internal messaging;
- Coordinating visits from partner national society communications teams and donors;
- Supporting the IFRC team and Management as required;
- Performing other relevant duties as required.
Education Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or equivalent qualification
Experience:
- Five years of experience of working in journalism and public relations
- Experience of working in communications in humanitarian emergencies, complex crisis or conflict situations.
- Experience of community engagement programming.
- Experience managing social media.
- Interest and skills in photography and videography.
- Experience in coaching and transferring skills and knowledge to counterparts.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong representational skills.
- Excellent writing and public presentation / media relations skills.
- Team player, with the ability to coordinate and engage others and build good working relationships with internal and external partners.
- Highly motivated proactive self-starter, able to set and achieve goals using own initiative.
- Highly organised, proactive and innovative approach to work.
- Good computer skills (Windows, spread sheets, word processing)
Languages:
- Fluently spoken and written English
- Fluently spoken and written Bangla,
- Good understanding of Chittagong dialect.
