Helen Keller International (HKI), an International NGO, has been working in Bangladesh since 1978. HKI implements different projects in partnership with national and international NGOs, development partners, academic and research institutions, and the private sector. HKI takes a gender-sensitive approach to improving nutrition, food security and eye health. Current program areas include Dhaka, Sylhet, Chittagong and the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).

Helen Keller International (HKI) was awarded an agreement to lead the Development Food Security Activity (DFSA) Sustainable Agriculture and Production Linked to Improved Nutrition Status, Resilience, and Gender Equity (SAPLING) by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on September 30, 2015. Under this five-year program, HKI, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Caritas Bangladesh and three local implementing partners work in partnership with individuals, communities, traditional institutions and the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) through the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs (MOCHTA), to apply a multi-sectoral approach to increase food security in the sub-districts of Thanchi, Ruma, Lama, Rowangchari, and Bandarban Sadar, within the Bandarban District of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).

HKI is seeking suitable fellows from the youth of Bandarban for the following fellowship opening under the SAPLING Learning Corps program. The SAPLING Learning Corps is a professional career development program founded on the principles of “on the job” training and mentoring and NOT an employment program. The program has been designed to build local capacity by helping youth to develop relevant career skills, enabling them to professionally contribute to the sustainable development of the CHT

SAPLING Learning Corps Fellowship Program

Being mentored by SAPLING’s expert professionals, Learning Corps fellows will gain practical knowledge in specific career domains through ‘learning by doing’. A Learning Corps fellow will learn during the fellowship by assisting a senior member of staff of SAPLING in various activities with close mentoring, coaching, access to technical resources and exposure to a large-scale USAID program, enabling fellows to be empowered professionally and contribute to positive change in the lives of the people of Bandarban. After successfully completing the fellowship program, Learning Corps fellows should demonstrate significant knowledge, have the skills to perform the tasks of their selected domain, be recognized for their competencies and ability to work independently, and be known for their high-level of professionalism.

General Requirements

  • Bandarban resident; aged 18 to 29.
  • From one of the 5 Upazilas of Bandarban district in which SAPLING operates (Bandarban Sadar, Rowangchari, Thanchi, Ruma and Lama).
  • Unemployed for last 3 months or more
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to use MS Office applications, email and internet
  • Ability to contribute in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment
  • Willingness to learn and gain experience as a member of a team
  • Willingness to travel in remote areas of Bandarban
  • Working knowledge of English
  • Fluency in at least one of the ethnic languages spoken within Bandarban
  • Enrolled in or graduated from an accredited academic institute / university; or have the appropriate level of education/experience to undertake the designated fellowship.
  • Have the educational background relevant to one of the fellowship domains.
