A. Responsibilities

The IT Officer provides support in

  • Dealing with all questions arising in this area
  • Identifying relevant problems and issues and assisting in formulating implementation-oriented solutions
  • Further developing instruments and assisting in introducing innovation and change
  • Managing knowledge by disseminating and documenting know-how, experience and information
  • Deputize the Network Administrator in all aspects of network management duties as and when required
  • Ensures implementation and follow up on the GIZ IT standards, policies and protocols

The IT Officer performs the following tasks:

B. Tasks

1. Hardware

The IT Officer

  • Assists in purchasing and maintaining hardware (notebooks, printers, digital cameras, scanners, servers and all PCs) in accordance with current GIZ standards
  • In consultation with management, helps purchase and improve hardware and networks, assists with testing new hardware systems, and identifies options for upgrading existing systems and peripherals
  • The installation & configuration of routing and switching equipment
  • The installation & configuration of system/application software as required on client PC
  • Remote troubleshooting and fault finding if issues occur upon initial installation

2. Software

The IT Officer

  • Helps maintain required GIZ standard software (e.g. Electronic Cashbook, MS Office, WinPACCS Cost Control, SAP)
  • Helps update and purchase new software
  • Helps regularly update antivirus software
  • The basic configuration of firewalls

3. Internet, websites

The IT Officer

  • Assists with website maintenance
  • After consultation with management, makes necessary modifications to the existing home page

4. Server Administration and Operation

The IT Officer

  • Support in establishing the networking environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation, defining, documenting and enforcing system standards
  • Deputize the Network Administrator in maximizing network performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting network problems and outages, scheduling upgrades and collaborating with network architects on network optimization
  • Support in undertaking data network fault investigations in local and wide area environments, using information from multiple sources
  • Assist securing network systems by establishing and enforcing policies, and defining and monitoring access
  • The support and administration of firewall environments in line with IT security policy
  • Support in reporting network operational status by gathering and prioritizing information and managing projects
  • Upgrading data network equipment to the latest stable firmware releases
  • Data-centre operation (HVAC and Power system, Access Control, Networking, Management, Server hardening and Data Integrity)

5. Operational support

The IT Officer

  • Helps install and maintain the local area network (LAN)
  • In consultation with management and within the limits of his/her authority to act, consults with suppliers to ensure that the network, telephone system and computer hardware function properly
  • Incorporates market developments on relevant IT issues on his/her own initiative

6. General tasks

The IT Officer

  • Carries out and ensures general administration of the entire IT system
  • Backs up data and safeguards the system against hackers
  • Resolves all computer and internet problems, prepares all the necessary information and provides phone support
  • Ensures an IT emergency service
  • Assists in advising on IT projects
  • Maintains a list of all hardware and software systems, and updates this to reflect changes
  • Documents the installation and settings on the server and on all computers.
  • Liaising with project management teams, third-line engineers and service desk engineers, ISP, on a regular basis

7. Other duties/additional tasks

  • Performs other duties and tasks at the request of management

C. Required qualifications, competences and experience

Qualifications

  • BSc/MSc in IT
  • Familiarity with IT hardware and the software used, IT network systems, database software, GIZ intranet and a basic understanding of specific GIZ software (SAP, APS, AMS, WinPACCS, etc.)
  • A solid background in project work and ability to work autonomously, take initiative and pro-active. Should be efficient in meeting commitment, observing deadlines and achieving results.
  • Strong analytical and communication (spoken, written, presentational) skills, including ability to summarize and clearly present complex issues. Fluent in English and Bangla.
  • Strong ability to work in a team and be supportive to other efforts and work
  • Linux/Windows based server operation and NAS configuration
  • Basic idea on PHP/MySql, NGINX, Linux/Windows server OS, Caching server, Load Balancer, DB Replication, SSL/TLS encryption, VPN, Central Log Management System, NAGIOS , Node.JS
  • Clear understanding of online/offline backup system (Windows/Linux box)
  • Sound Knowledge on Virtual Machine Technology (Vmware, VirtualBox, Hyper-V)

Professional experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in this area

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Outstanding working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, phone, fax, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management
  • Professional Certification (CCNA, MCSA, MCSE, RHCE) will be considered added advantage
