Position: Teacher Professional Development Specialist

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of: Teacher Professional Development Specialist for a forthcoming USAID-funded early grade reading project in Bangladesh.

Project Description:

The primary purpose of the Shekhar Jonno Pori “Read to Learn” activity is to provide technical assistance to the Government of Bangladesh and its sector-wide Fourth Primary Education Development Program (PEDP4), as well as to schools and teachers. The activity aligns with the USAID Education Strategy to improve the reading skills of students in primary grades. Technical assistance will take the form of training services, provision and dissemination of goods such as teaching and learning materials, national and sub-national assessment design and implementation. The activity will foster partnerships between schools and families to enhance opportunities for children to read outside of school and in the home.

Position Description:

The Teacher Professional Development Specialist will have overall responsibility for managing and providing quality assurance for activities related to professional development in reading and writing programming. He or she will take a leadership role in the design and implementation of training content for literacy, second language acquisition, classroom management, formative and summative assessment, active learning, inclusion of children with disabilities, gender sensitivity, alternative discipline and safe schools, etc. The Teacher Professional Development Specialist will collaborate closely with government counterparts to assure integration with current education activities. Additionally, he or she will collaborate with staff working on project materials development, M&E, and community engagement teams to ensure consistency and cohesion of all teacher support, training, coaching, and mentoring. This individual will develop tools and resources to support the teacher professional development as well as for evaluating program effectiveness. Activities may include identifying professional development gaps and strengths for enhancement, choosing professional development objectives, designing trainings, writing training manuals, designing other professional development opportunities (such as peer learning or e-courses), and working in an advisory capacity as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or higher in education, education planning, education policy, elementary education, education management instructional systems design or other relevant field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in teacher professional development program design and implementation for curriculum and materials development; active learning methods; and mentoring and capacity-building of teachers, teacher educators, staff, and counterparts
  • Knowledge of the Bangladeshi teacher professional development context and Ministry structures at the national and regional levels.
  • Knowledge of international best practices in reading and writing content and instructional practices
  • Experience with research, monitoring, and evaluation and the application of findings to improve reading and writing programs
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills working on large and complex donor-funded programs, preferably with USAID
  • Experience reporting on large donor-funded programs, preferably with USAID contracts
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and gain the respect and confidence of host country counterparts, staff, and clients
  • Ability to mentor, motivate and empower the performance of team members and counterparts
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication in English preferred.
  • Must be a fluent or native Bangla speaker
