The FAO Representation in Bangladesh is inviting applications of qualified and experienced candidates for the following position to be filled for FAO Bangladesh under the project GCP/BGD/054/USA.  Incumbents will be recruited as National Consultant:


Translator: 1 position (Dhaka based)

The FAO, with financial support from USAID is providing support to the Government of Bangladesh to establish the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority in order to strengthen food control infrastructures to enhance inter-agency collaboration and cooperation for protection of consumers’ health. 

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Bangladesh, under the direct supervision of the National Team Leader, and in collaboration with the National Operations Officer and other members of the project Technical Assistance Team (TAT) as well as the relevant local/national authorities, the consultant will carry out the following tasks under the “Institutionalization of Food Safety in Bangladesh for Safer Food” project:

  • Conversion of the following Food Safety Rules and Regulations from Bengali to English (Authentic English Text).

A. Rules

  • Food Safety (Seizure and Administrative procedures) Rules 2014; and
  • Food Safety (Technical Committee) Rules 2017.

B. Regulations

  • Food Safety (Sample collection, examination and analysis) Regulation 2017;
  • Food Safety (Use of Food Additives material) Regulation 2017;
  • Food Safety (Chemical contaminant, Toxin and Harmful residues) Regulation 2017; and
  • Food Safety (Package Food Labelling) Regulation 2017.
  • Edit the final English version of the documents by incorporating feedback received from TAT and BFSA (to be present physically in the meeting for feedback/correction- 2/3 meetings)
  • English version to be submitted in phases – after conversion/completion of every two rules/regulations for feedback; and Submission of the final English version of all the documents within the agreed timeframe.

Qualifications and Experiences:

  • An advanced University Degree in Law;
  • At least five (5) years of relevant (rules & regulations) practice experience (with proven records) in translation from Bengali to English and English to Bengali;
  • Broad understanding of Bangladesh legislation of relevance to Bangladesh Food Safety Act, 2013 implementation, for example, Penal Code (Act No. Xlv of 1860), Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 (Act No. V of 1898), Evidence Act, 1872 (Act No. I of 1872);
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and institution;
  • Ability to communicate in a credible and effective manner;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Bangla;
  • Computer literate - the standard business software is Microsoft Windows 7 and MS Pro and Office 2010

Language: Proficiency in English as well as Bangla

Duration: WAE (When Actually Employed basis) for 60 days within 31 August 2018
