Democracy International, Inc., a USA based international organization, is implementing a USAID project entitled Promoting Peace and Justice (PPJ) in Bangladesh for a period of three years. USAID’s PPJ program is designed to directly address the factors currently constraining Bangladesh’s justice system and seeks to collaborate with government and CSO counterparts to expand access to justice.

DI is recruiting professionals for the following full-time position for its office in Dhaka.

Legal Aid Component Lead Program Officer (LACL-PO)

The Legal Aid Component Lead Program Officer will be responsible for overseeing on a day-to-day basis the implementation of PPJ’s efforts to strengthen the capacity of Legal Aid Committees (LACs), promote demand-driven advocacy for legal reform, increase public outreach by LACs, increase coordination between LACs and other actors in the justice sector, and address the dearth of panel lawyers. As some of this work will be performed through grants to NGOs, the LACL will also monitor and evaluate grantees’ activities and provide technical assistance to grantees as required. The position may require extensive travel throughout the country.

Position Description

Key responsibilities:

  1. Monitor and evaluate grantees’ activities and provide technical assistance to grantees as required.
  2. Responsible for the day-to-day management of program activities.
  3. Facilitate and manage the implementation of the program through cooperation of partners.
  4. Manage and develop relationships with PPJ partners.
  5. Maintain coordination with local stakeholders and Government officials.
  6. Develop progress updates/reports.
  7. Conduct field visits as assigned and conduct monitoring visits to relevant activities in the field.
  8. Contribute to PPJ’s budget preparation.
  9. Assist in preparation of annual work plan. 

Qualifications and Competencies:

  1. Legal degree and experience background.
  2. Minimum 3-4 years of work experience in the legal sector, preferably with experience working in legal aid or with the administration of legal aid issues.
  3. Experience working in community participation-type projects.
  4. Excellent command of English (spoken and written).
  5. Strong analytical skills and ability to think strategically.
  6. Able to plan and work independently with minimal supervision.
  7. Able to influence, communicate, co-operate and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  9. Ability to manage multiple and complex tasks.
  10. Strong knowledge on various computer applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and other relevant software.
