Democracy International, Inc., a USA based international organization, is implementing a USAID project entitled Promoting Peace and Justice (PPJ) in Bangladesh for a period of three years. USAID’s PPJ program is designed to directly address the factors currently constraining Bangladesh’s justice system and seeks to collaborate with government and CSO counterparts to expand access to justice.

DI is recruiting professionals for the following full-time position for its office in Dhaka.

Advocacy & Outreach Component Lead

The Advocacy & Outreach (AOCL) will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of PPJ’s efforts to increase citizen awareness of their legal rights and responsibilities.  These activities will include initiatives to:

  • Sensitize communities, including vulnerable populations, to improve understandings of legal rights and responsibilities.

These interventions, among others, may include some or all of the following:

  • Facilitate courtyard meetings (including upazila LACs and union LACs coverage areas) to improve the understanding of legal rights and responsibilities (in targeted areas on specific legal issues), what legal aid resources are available, and how the judicial system operates.
  • Host public question and answer sessions with legal aid officers present to address community queries.
  • Develop and implement community radio programming on the identified target issues.
  • Conduct campaigns among students from standard 8-12 to spread knowledge of rights and responsibilities that they can then communicate to their communities (mechanisms can include debate competitions).
  • Conduct campaigns among university/law students to spark interest in public interest work.
  • Engage electronic and social media for national-level legal literacy campaigns on targeted legal issues including CVE, counter-trafficking, safe migration, and gender-based violence.

Position Description

Key responsibilities:

  1. Monitor and evaluate grantees’ activities and provide technical assistance to grantees as required.
  2. Responsible for the day-to-day management of component activities.
  3. Facilitate and manage the implementation of the program through cooperation of partners.
  4. Manage and develop relationships with PPJ partners.
  5. Maintain coordination with local stakeholders and Government officials.
  6. Develop progress updates/reports.
  7. Conduct field visits as assigned and conduct monitoring visits to relevant activities in the field.
  8. Contribute to PPJ’s budget preparation.
  9. Assist in preparation of annual work plan.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  1. Legal degree and experience background.
  2. Minimum 3-4 years of work experience in legal sector, preferably with experience working with government, Parliament or NGOs.
  3. Extensive experience working at the community level
  4. Experience supporting USAID-funded programs strongly desired.
  5. Excellent command of English (spoken and written).
  6. Strong analytical skills and ability to think strategically.
  7. Able to plan and work independently with minimal supervision.
  8. Able to influence, communicate, co-operate and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders.
  9. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  10. Ability to manage multiple and complex tasks.
  11. Strong knowledge on various computer applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and other relevant software.
