Training on inclusive market development (IMD) and private sector engagement (PSE)

Introduction
Christian Aid (CA) has been working in Bangladesh since 1972. We are recognised for our work on humanitarian response, climate change, inclusive market development and private sector engagement, disaster risk management, gender equality and human rights issues, and have significant expertise and experience of working with government and civil societies. Our programme promotes access to just and equitable resources and supports the creation of resilient and thriving livelihoods for marginalised people and communities. We believe in downward accountability and, alongside our partners, we are committed to making private sectors, government and public institutions more accountable to communities for the services they provide. Currently CA works with 18 partners across 25 of the most vulnerable districts of Bangladesh including the southern coastal region, north-west, central floods and wetland areas. Long standing relationships with local organisations are based on mutual learning and experience.
Background

Christian Aid Bangladesh has four thematic areas: Climate Change; Economic Justice and Inclusive Market; Gender and Inequality; and Humanitarian. Under the thematic area of Economic Justice and Inclusive Market, Christian Aid is tackling the power imbalances in the markets that poor people are operating within as producers, employees, business owners and consumers. Christian Aid believes that by pursuing more market-oriented approaches we can create opportunities for enterprises run by poor people to grow in scale, profitability and strength, so that they are less likely to fail when faced with economic or environmental stress. We believe this will enable people living in poverty to achieve a greater share of the value of their productivity. It will also allow them to access goods and services that will make their livelihoods more secure. Besides, in a country like Bangladesh, the private sector is one of the leading agents in enhancing economic development. Various national policies (including five-year plans, national social safety-net programmes, and annual budget documents) have emphasised the significance of the role of the private sector and the market in reducing poverty.
