Red Cross-Red Crescent movement is the largest volunteer and humanitarian organization in the world. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), a national society of the movement, constituted on 31 March 1973 by the President's Order No.26 of 1973 with retrospective effect from 16 December 1971, is the biggest humanitarian organization in Bangladesh. Later on, the name and emblem were changed from Red Cross to Red Crescent on 4th April 1988 vide Act 25 of 1988.  As an auxiliary to the government, the Society provides humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable people and over the last 47 years, has undertaken a wide range of activities in humanitarian response, disaster management, health, capacity building and in promoting Red Cross/Red Crescent ideals and principles.

Currently Bangladesh Red Crescent Society is looking for a suitable Bangladeshi national for the position of “Faecal Sludge Management Laboratory Technician”. Both male and female nationals can apply.

Job Title : Lab Technician - FSM
Duration of contract : Up to 31st December 2019
Salary : Negotiable
Number of Post : Based on requirement
Report to : WASH Expert, PMO
Age : 36 years on 31st January, 2019 (Age limit will be relaxed in case of potential candidate)
Duty station : Cox’s Bazar with frequent field visit within the district.

Purpose:

The technical person will, together with the FSFL delegate and the respective operators, learn how to plan and conduct sampling at faecal sludge/wastewater treatment plants, perform the analysis of samples and prepare data for reporting. The Lab Technician -FSM cooperates closely with the WASH Team (BDRCS and IFRC) and directly reports to WASH Expert from BDRCS.

Educational Qualification:

  • B.Sc. in Chemistry/Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Microbiology/Agriculture/Environmental Science   or equivalent degree.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Collecting sample from field
  • Assist to conduct a scientific investigations and experiments
  • Planning, setting up and undertaking controlled experiments and trials
  • Keep record and analyses data
  • To demonstrate standard operating procedures for testing sample.
  • Preparing and/or testing samples
  • Maintaining, calibrating, cleaning and testing sterility of the equipment
  • Providing technical support to FSM team if required.
  • Presenting results to technical WASH delegate/WASH team
  • Writing reports, reviews and summaries
  • keeping up to date with relevant data, reports and necessary documents
  • Assist to carry out risk assessments if required
  • Ordering and maintaining stock and resource

Perform any other related duties or responsibilities that may be assigned by the line manager

Specific tasks:

  • Support the BDRCS WASH Expert/Officer in day to day planning
  • Maintain working relationship with all other sectors of BDRCS (Health, Shelter, Relief, PSS, CEA and RFL etc.)
  • Support WASH activities in the field.
  • Cooperate with the WASH team specifically on sanitation and hygiene component

Personal Specifications

Experience:

  • Six months field experience and working with displaced people from Myanmar will be preferable.
  • Relevant/work experience in environmental laboratories or laboratories of wastewater/fecal sludge treatment plants is an asset.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Good Computer skills
  • Good analytical thinking
  • Organizing capacity, coordination and planning skills
  • Sound knowledge in subject area
  • Fluent in English and Bangla.

Personal qualities:

  • Adhere to the 7 fundamental principles of Red Cross and Red Crescent movement
  • Act at all times in accordance with the Code of Conduct of RCRC Movement
  • Honesty and high level of integrity.
