Context:

BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. We use media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. We partner with civil society, local media and others to produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues; and strengthen the media sector through capacity building. Our work is built on insights from our research and engagement with communities and is focused on three key themes: governance and rights, health and resilience.

Overall purpose:

The Training Assistant will work closely with training officer, project, research and production colleagues to design and deliver effective and imaginative training and outreach materials and activities which build on mass-media outputs aimed at urban slum dwellers. The Training Assistant will also work to develop relationships with NGO and government partners; and execute familiarisation and training-of-trainer activities to allow partners to make use of BBC Media Action materials and techniques in their day-to-day work with urban communities across Bangladesh.

Main Duties & responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the training officer to identify the key needs of partners, both in terms of organisational capacity and the use of media and communication at community level.
  • Support to design engaging and effective training sessions and training materials (including syllabuses, course structures, session plans and hand out/toolkit materials).
  • Ensure that deliverables are on track, on time and to the required quality standard.
  • In close collaboration with the training officer, deliver effective and engaging training for participants from partner organisations, including travel across the whole of Bangladesh as required.
  • Coordinate with trainers and outreach personnel from partner organisations, ensuring that they receive the support they need as they roll out outreach activities at community level.
  • Provide timely and accurate forecasting and reporting information for training activities and deliverables.
  • Work closely with the BBC Media Action administration team to ensure that the activity follows all procurement, contracting, travel and other policies and processes.

The position is based in Dhaka but with travel to training locations across the country as necessary. In general, normal office hours will apply but the nature of the role means that a flexible approach to working time will be necessary.

Experience of partnership working, with the confidence and proven ability to deal with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.

Experience of designing and delivering face-to-face training programmes in a development setting

An understanding of sexual and reproductive health and its relevance to urban slum of Bangladesh

Experience and knowledge of informal training methods, including group-work facilitation and participatory approaches

Experience of working in a development or related setting, with an understanding of the needs of socially excluded groups.

Experience of developing and delivering training activities aimed at urban slum dwellers

Well developed IT skills, including Microsoft Office.

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to form and maintain effective working relationships at all levels.

Excellent English and Bangla language skills (written and spoken).
