Communications Assistant

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Bangladesh and direct supervision of the Chief Technical Advisor in coordination with the National Project Coordinator from Bangladesh Forestry Department, the consultant will carry out tasks in regular consultation and coordination with the Country Office Communications specialist and where feasible the Regional Communication Officer, FAORAP, the incumbent shall ensure coherence with FAO’s corporate communication policy, editorial style and operational guidelines for all communication and information outputs.  The main tasks of the consultant will be to:

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Arrange and consolidate information and data from the project staff and relevant national stakeholders for use in communications materials;
  • Develop and Design project publications, fact sheets, booklet, leaflets and prepare layouts for documents, reports and communication materials for different audiences;
  • Maintain press clips/files clips, films, photos, promotion materials, leaflet, and brochures etc;
  • In close collaboration with other team members prepare awareness raising materials;
  • Develop documentary scripts and story board to be used in the preparation of short documentary films;
  • Prepare 5-10 documentaries of 2-5 minutes each reflecting the project activities related to forest monitoring, sustainable land management, greenhouse gas inventory, climate change mitigation and adaptation;
  • Improve and edit art-work, photos, charts and other graphic elements;
  • Support and propose creative approaches to communicate technical communications;
  • Use photographic and videography skills to document project activities;
  • Prepare multi-media communication products related to the various elements of the project;
  • Assist the FD, in co-operation with the International experts to design visually attractive and functional user interface and content for the website and web-based information management system;
  • Assist in the preparation of events, organization of meetings/workshops at central and local levels;
  • Other duties related to communication and design requested by the CTA. 

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree or diploma in Graphic Design, Journalism, Communications or related fields;
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in communication and/or public relations;
  • Practical experience in graphic design, including the use of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Premere Pro, etc.)
  • Familiarity with multi-media software for preparing videos and sound recording desirable.
  • Proven experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of printing processes (offset and digital) and colour management;
  • Knowledge of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms, as well as modern design trends such as infographic, quota gram, tableau, etc;
  • Knowledge and experience with websites and content management systems is an advantage;
  • Knowledge in media and reporting protocols of the Government of Bangladesh is an advantage;
  • Good understanding of mass media and communication networks in forestry, climate change, and environment;
  • Good knowledge about branding;
  • Experience in working with UN agencies and international organizations is an advantage;
  • Excellent spoken and written English;
  • Good interpersonal skill and high team work spirit.
