Project Summary
ActionAid Bangladesh is working for the rights of the sex workers and their children from 2003. The initial programs were focused to tackle the HIV infection. Later the interventions went into recognizing the rights of the sex workers. The demand to recognize the basic rights of the children of the sex workers came from the SW’s themselves. INGO’s and civil society organizations came forward in solidarity with different models of intervention. ActionAid in its working area, two brothels of Faridpur, established a Child development centre with psychosocial counseling, education, and accommodation support. The goal of the child development centre is to prepare the child who is coming from an unusual background with life skills and proper education to be a part of the mainstream society. Along with the child development support we are also creating awareness among the community, demanding education rights and a right to live a life with dignity. The child development centre in Faridpur which is named Shpla Kuri is now housing 30 girls and 12 boys between the ages of 6 – 15 years. ActionAid Bangladesh is working with Shapla Mohila Sangasta (SMS), Faridpur as partnership and SMS is managing the Child Development Center.  

Shapla Kuri Child Development Centre (SKCDC) since its inception supported by ActionAid Bangladesh. Current participants of the SKCDC are doing very well in their studies, many of them stood among top 10 in the schools they are attending. They are very good with creative art works and sports. The support that CDC is currently providing is supporting the children to prepare themselves for their future, ActionAid is optimistic that the facility will be expanded to host 48 children by the end of June 2014 and gradually 100 children.

Key Responsibilities Include (not limited to)

  • S/he will be the focal person to perform all the functions of SKCDC. Beside this s/he should have the attribute to face any kind of emergency conditions;
  • S/he will be responsible for staff distribution and staff management among staffs dedicated for SKCDC;
  • S/he will prepare demand note for food and others related to SKCDC;
  • S/he will maintain regular communication with the home management committee;
  • S/he will ensure various facilities for the children of SKCDC through communication with Government and Non Government organizations;
  • S/he will maintain a register of all assets of SKCDC;
  • Responsible to arrange meeting with home management committee and children of SKCDC;
  • The manager will keep communication with school teachers and school management committee;
  • S/he will have proper information and update about children’s education of SKCDC;
  • S/he will always keep in touch with the children of SKCDC and take care of their education, cultural activities and others;
  • The manager will responsible to maintain good relationship with local administration;
  • S/he will formulate proper planning for sustainable development of center and assist to implement the sustainability plan;
  • The manager will be responsible for national and local level advocacy for the wellbing of SKCDC;
  • S/he has to submit monthly, quarterly and annual report within given period of time;

Relationships
S/he will report to Executive Director of Shapla Mahila Shangsta. S/he will maintain functional relationship with ActionAid Bangladesh Focal person. The incumbent will maintain relationship with the parents of the children, other staff of the center, local government/administration, schools and others.

Required qualification and competencies

  • Graduation or Post Graduation in relevant subject with academic and professional credibility;
  • At least 3 years experience in relevant field, work in children home will be added value;
  • Understanding on Child Rights is must;
  • Understanding of different marginalized group and society especially sex workers and children;
  • Excellent documentation and reporting skill;
  • Proven experience to work with local government / administration;
  • Should be gender sensitive and familiar with Human Right Based Approach;
  • Ability to work under pressure and deadline;
  • Good interpersonal skill;
  • Ability to communicate in proper way with children;
  • Computer skills on Word and Data Processing is must;
  • Good communication and report writing skills both in English and Bangla;
